Hi all,

GW Community had an Imperial fist army https://www.warhammer-community.com/2019/10/23/space-marines-showcase-darcys-imperial-fistsgw-homepage-post-3/ that I liked the look of. In short, the guy says he does Zandri Dust, then heavy drybrush of Morghast Bone, white highlights then a super thinned Ilyandran yellow contrast paint as a glaze. When I tried it though, mine looks like sand coloured with a yellow hue and does not *pop* at all like they do in the pictures.

Do you think is possible to get it like this:

Or have they done camera tricksies?

Advice welcome!

Gathering the Informations.

Yes.

The thing that's important to remember is that he's likely used Zandri Dust spray and Contrast Medium alongside the Iyanden Yellow.

Also, I wouldn't discount the possibility that any photos posted to Warhammer Community inevitably have some kind of post-editing. The colours may not be exactly as they appear in the photo. Studio lighting and the base colour choice can also influence how things appear relative to what you have in front of you.

Given it's an army spotlight, the methodology outlined must surely be correct or else what's the point?

Could you possibly post your model using the technique?

It says in the army spotlight that he did three coats of glaze, so try that.

Thanks guys.

Yes I also tried 3 heavily diluted glazes (6 drops medium to 1 drop contrast) and even a 4th that was closer to 50:50 medium/contrast.

Every time I take a photo of my minis it comes out looking like a bad example from one of those "people of walmart" blogs.

However, this youtube clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSR_xReAQxA shows very much the same technique and my mini comes out looking quite similar.

I do suspect they've done colour saturation in the picture but I'm envious because it's a perfect pitch of yellow (IMO). Yellow without being orange and yellow without being too candy.

My next step will be to try a light Yriel Yellow drybrush and see if I can get it to pop a bit more. I also wondered if doing something with more of a gloss finish might help.

Again, thanks for advice, I appreciate it.

There are some miniature photographers who do a really nice job with lighting and exposure then post process everything. I’m not saying that yellow absolutely looks different IRL but it’s entirely possible. Yellow is one of the colors that sometimes needs to be balanced so it doesn’t look brown or orange in photography.

Use a test mini and don’t overload your brush when glazing.
