Hello! So I'm not currently playing WH40k but I've been wanting to get back into it. I haven't played since waaay back and I've been trying to read up on stuff and watch battlereports to get a hang of what I want to build.

This is the current idea I have and I do realise there's some stuff coming for Alpha legion so I may change things try to grab another relic weapon for the third Chaos Lord if they release a cool one.

This list is by no means meant to be tournament viable but I would like for it to at least be workable in a casual enviroment so any advice on how to improve it without changing the core of spammed similar characters using I Am Alpharius and a generally forward moving army I'm happy to listen to some more experienced people

I'm going to make my own custom warband and convert a bunch of models and I really want a uniform-ish equipment on the characters and Mark of Slaanesh on everything otherwise I'm pretty flexible with the content

The whole Index thing is a bit confusing to me but as far as I can understand it the Chaos characters on Steed of Slaanesh are still legal to use in normal play?

Hey man, welcome back.

I had had a gap from 5th ed through to the start of 8th. I generally play a mix of daemons, T Sons and Alpha Legion here's what I've learned:

1) Shooting and psychic from behind a screen is generally better than mele focused play. There's sooo many tricks to use against mele and there's a lot of stuff to remember to play mele lists well.
2) VotLW and Endles Cacophony is by far the best stratergy combo in the game.
3) a spread of wepon types is essential, you need a few high AP d6/ 3D weapons, a bunch of hig rof medium strength and a decent ammount of chaff clearing.
4) Reaper Chaincannons and amazing
5) If you are taking mele then you're better off with the fly keyword always!

Looking at the list above

1) jump packs will be more useful on lords
2) dark apostle is expensive and will probably not help, your opponent will shoot the non buffed unit
3) I'd take one deathclaw one, chain claw on those contemptors. For a few points it'll really up their damage vs knights and the like
4) I'd drop one lord and downgrade the dark apostle to a warpsmith and take some RCC havocks. Hide them and spring them on your opponent for 64 heavy bolter shots with +1 to wound

Thank you for the advice!

I really want the steeds for modelling purposes so I'm fine with them being a little weaker.

I was thinking the Dark Apostle would be good buffing the Terminators but maybe he's a bit too expensive for that

Do you still get the doube claw bonus if you only upgrade one of them?

I wanna keep the lord but I'll see about getting some Havocs in there are the RCC should I chain the loadout on the CSM squads to carry some of them as well or should I keep them just to havocs?

Ditch everything in this list including the alpha legion tags. As said before Slaaneshi shooty units are amazing like say.

Chosen terminators that deep strike and all have combi weapons /heavy flamers

Chosen marines in transport all rocking combi plasma/melta accompanied by a lord, exalted champ and maybe a sorcerer. I usually use Flawless host but renegades cant use VoTLW.

Chaos Space Marines or Chaos soup lists, inn my experience, is best used in conjunction of heavy CP use. Choosing very little in the way of chaff or throw away units. There are many very good effective units that are reasonably priced and turn really nasty with cp usage.

Red corsairs are really good for characters and CP boosting.
All infantry, characters and hellbrute can advance and charge
Huron blackheart is a lord and psyker who can cast 2 powers a turn for 105pts with a fist, heavy flame and 4+ invul l. He also gets reaver lord, warlord trait to get you 2 relics for free. Since him being warlord also gives you an extra CP

Corsairs also have the second best strat in the game... pickup and redeploy any chaos space marines unit on any table edge at full strength. I put 3 meltas. Fist and slaanesh icon in a 20 man unit for maximum threat level.

Iron warrior slaaneshi oblits are pretty good for almost guaranteed destruction of anything under knight level strength in 1 turn

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I still haven't found a great use or fit for my playstyle for a Dark Apostle. No bike or jump pack option really sucks.

I was more looking for advice to make my list work rather than what completely different CSM lists I could build but thanks you both anyways

Yeah the extra attacks are for two mele weapons so you can mix and match.

RCC in squads are great but not essential. Plasma is also useful to add in there and you don't get -1 to hit with moving and firing heavy weapons.

Mono AL isn't a bad idea at all it's the best shooting list trait and although you miss out on some great units you'd get in soup everything works together and looks good on the battlefield.

Don't know if you've seen the psychic awakening previews but there's a few neat tricks available. You can protecet those Terminators or RCC havocs from shooting, with a strat, as long as they're not the nearest unit. Also there's better warlord traits and relics to choose from.

If you can stick two lightning claws on one of thise lords then you can have a super blender. Also there's a great sniper lord you can build with a relic combi bolter and WL trait.

Finally you can put any infantry back in deepstrike which might help with positioning late game.

The rules previews are here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/359378-chaos-rumors-in-psychic-awakening-2/page-12

I made some changes to your list . there are still about 200 points to spend. because you play alfa legion you can infiltrate troops (chosen ) for 1 CP a unit. set up more then 9 inches away from your opponent ... this way you move up your Characters and charge in 1 time giving them cover because you have troops with you just make sure after combat you consolidate your troops in front of your characters. (chosen with chainswords have 3 attacks a piece the power fist guys have 2 . so you have a mix match of things you can hit and do
