Good evening,
today I am trying a map + pictures battle report, tell me if it helps you understand !

This Saturday I played with against my friend's Tyranid army, which I had not faced since SM 2.0. Playing classic marines, I was very interested in this match up, having fewer anti hordes options than primaris. The boost of the codex would it be enough ?
We are playing maƫlstrom of war + kill points + the objectives hold at the end of the game give victory points.

The lists are as follows:

Spoiler:

Ultramarines successors, Hungry for Battles, Master Artisans, 11CP

Chapter Master with Teeth of Terra, plasma pistol and jump pack, adept of the codex, the Imperium's sword
Chaplain with jump pack and plasma pistol
Librarian in terminator armor
Lieutnant
Ancien with stormbolter and seal of oath
5 assault terminators
10 sternguards
3 company veterans with combi-plasma
2*5 tactical marines including a plasma gun and a combi-plasma
3*5 scouts
6 scout snipers including 1 heavy bolter
1 thunderfire
1 stalker (the vindicator is count as stalker until I buy it)
2*3 scout bikers
5 devastator with grav cannons and a combi plasma
3 drop pods

Spoiler:

KRAKEN hive-fleet, 9pc

-2 winged hive tyrant, warlord with -1 to be hit and -1 damage, both with devourers
-Old One Eye
-1 neurothrope
-1 broodlord
-1 trygon
-1 exocrine
-19 genestealers
-27 hormagaunts
-30 termagaunts with devourer
-20 gargoyles
-2 carnifexes

DEPLOYMENT

Spoiler:

TOUR1:

Spoiler:

Space Marines
The marines have the initiative, so they start. The chaplain sings a litany to the the sniper scouts. Very little movement on this side, just the sternguard veterans arrive in their own deployment zone to secure an objective and the right flank scouts who leave their objective to retreat into their deployement area, to avoid getting charged by the genestealers.

No psyker on the table, we immediately go to the shooting phase. The stalker starts the fight by inflicting 10 damages on the tyrant prince through the use of his stratagem, then the sniper scouts finish it with two mortal wounds. Sternguards veterans shoot 10 genestealers. Finally the thunderfire shoot tremor shells on the surviving genestealers and the hormagaunts, respectively killing 3 and 4.

Tyranids
The tyranid player advances the genestealers and hormagaunts as best as they can in my direction, the gargoyles are spaced by advancing while holding their objective, doing a congo line, preventing any deep strike on this flank, thus protecting the exocrine . The carnifexes and Old One Eye advance straight to the stalker.

Psychic phase and the neurothrope and the broodlord promptly annihilate the sniper scouts of their smites. In the shooting phase the exocrine kills 5 veterans despite the use of a transhuman physiology.

One of the carnifexes manages to assault the stalker thanks to a stratagem and destroys it.

TOUR2

Spoiler:

Space Marines
This turn sees a lot of movement: the shotgun scouts are heading back to the objective now that the Genestealer threat has passed. Scout bikers advance and get to mid-range of the gargoyles, the chapter master approaches the carnifex. The tactical squads arrive in a dop pod behind the hormagaunts, in the hope of taking linebreaker and dividing the tyranid army. Finally, the terminators and the archivist teleport to 9 "genestealers, in order to attempt a charge at 8" with reroll and crush the tyranid right flank.

Psychic phase and the powers of the archivist are denyied.

Shooting phase, in anticipation of the failure of the terminators assault following the tyranids denying Veil of Time, the veterans kill 3 more Genestealers and the swarm of homagaunts is destroyed by the thundefire, tactical squad, drop pods and a failed moral test. Scout bikers wound badly the carnifex and kill 9 gargoyles.

The terminators fail their charge while the carnifex is finished in close combat by the chapter master. Big mistake (useless moreover, the 6 bikers having 20A in charge, that would have been enough). In consolidation, the bikers are placed in front of the chapter master to screen him but it's too late, he is exposed.

Brother-master Lazarus gazes at his own failure and doom:

Tyranids
The second winged tyranid arrives slightly left to the terminators, the broodlord also gets closer to his prey, the librarian, and the three remaining genestealers do the same. The Old One Eye and his last Carnifex close to thebikers and the chapter master. The trygon arrives in deep strike with his gaunts, right to the terminators.

Psychic phase and a storm of smites falls on the terminators, the librarian denying only one. 3 terminators and a half die to it.

In the shooting phase, the exocrine destroys the 6 bikers, leaving the field free for carnifexes. The gaunts fire on one of the tactical squad, killing 4 as well as a shotgun scout.

The carnifexes charge the master (thanks to a command reroll) and kill him, the broodlord charges the librarian and kills him, the wht and the genestealers charge the terminators and do not kill them: the sergeant survives, intact, defying death and ... keeping the wht in close combat. The broodlord survives with 1HP.
Damned !

TOUR3:

Spoiler:

Space marines
The last droo pod arrives, landing with his deadly cargo at the feet of the tyrant. Target in sight !
The survivor of tactical squad II hides behind a wall and an objective, while squad I goes on a building. The terminator sergeant then activates his emergency teleportation beacon and is immediately teleported to his deployment area, just in front of the old one-eye and his last 6HP.
HAHA ! I am such a genius ! Do I think. I'm back to the game !

Shooting phase, it is now free reign for the devastator squad and the company veterans. But the damned tyrant refuses to die and despite the seal of the oath, survives with 4HP. -1to be hit and -1D is a great combination. The land speeder inflicts two wounds on the carnifex. The tactical marines inflict losses on the gargoyles, leaving only one alive, keeping an objective. So close !

Assault phase, the terminator sergeant tries to kill the Old One-Eye once and for all he has 4A , a reroll to hit and one to wound, it should be okay.. The techmarine leaves his thundefire cannon to assault the second carnifex and take good care of him with his two servo arm. Even when assaulting, he stays 6 "away from of his gun which thus remains on the table.

The techmarine charges, and kills its carnifex. The sergeant is charge too but only deals 3 wounds to the Old One-Ey. The shotgun scouts charge and kill the broodlord.
So close to get back in the game Didn't even kill the damned OOE

Tyranids
Having avoided huges losses during the SM turn, the tyranids gather their last strength to kill their prey. The diminished hive tyrant rises on the ruin near the thundefire, the trygon approaches the devastator, the gaunts get closer to the scouts. The old one-eye disengages.

Psychic phase and 3 scouts are smited by the tyrant. The exocrine kills the last tactical marine from squad II. The shotgun Scouts take no damage.

Assault phase and the tyrant charges the surviving scout into ruin, thus preventing the marines from scoring an objective. Shotgun scouts are assaulted by the gaunts, who regret it very quickly when they take losses. The devastators and the veterans are almost all killed by the trygon. The techmarine is killed by the Old One Eye.

TOUR4:

Spoiler:

Space marines
The last marines gather in their deployment area, ready to try to get the last victory points: a wounded OOE and tyrant. The OOE is finally put down by the combined shots of the bolter scouts, the land speeder, the ancient and the lieutnant. Then they all charge the prince, except the land speede who fail his charge, and put 3 wounds on the prince. Catastrophic failure for the marine player, who lets escape the enemy warlord WITH 1 HP !. Some gaunts are killed by the shotgun scouts, real MVP of that game

Tyranids
The prince takes his flight, and lands a few inches from the scouts. The neurothrope gets closer, the gaunts disengage and the trygon moves to the pod sitting on an objective. Psychic phase and the bolters scouts are destroyed by a smite, as well as the ancient. The trygon handles the drop pod and the lieutenan is killed by the tyrant t in the assault phase, and the game stops at the end of Tour 4 with a crushing tyranid victory.

Post-game:
Spoiler:

That's the second time I use this exact same list, and I like it. The drop pods are really great vehicles for classic marines. The list could be changed a little bit, I think I'll play a ven dread instead of the lieutenant and the third pod: it won't change my list at all, maybe giving one or two reroll less a turn to the veteran, who in addition never used their drop pod. And it could add a lot to the list, like a carnifex a turn could have died to a ven dread shooting here for example, or the exocrine in two shooting phases. I could keep the third pod (because I LOVE to have choice, it's a great flexibility to be able to do an almost null deployement) and take the land speeder out of the list, but that would cost me my briagde and thus 3CP...

For the game, I did one or two big mistakes: one with my chapter master, that was stupid, period. And I forgot how quick could a kraken unit be: I thought about the genestealers, but I didn't think carnifexes could be THAT quick and that resulted in my stalker being dead T1. He did great anyway but I could have deployed it a bit further away from the tyranids and it would have helped GREATLY against the second winged hive tyrant.
The teleportation beamer was pretty funny to use

Overall, I'm a bit sad because my last game against the necrons was an almost undisputed victory, the necrons being tabled if we had time to keep going (7 models being left) and I was really hoping to do better than before against the tyranids, an army I have always struggled against. Well, better luck next time !

Nice looking Tyranids army here. The maps are really great for following the action and definitely feel like the old White Dwarf battle reports.

I actually painted my friend's tyranid army in 2015, after my marine army (painted about 10 years ago, it was my first army so that explains the paint job !).
I do prefer maps and pictures written battle reports, and seeing as there is a lack of it, I have decided to write them myself. It takes some time but I like it. I just forgot to take a army picture before the game !
