Hi everyone,

I tried painting black yesterday (Abaddon Black) and it came out all glossy. Is there a GW alternative which is more dull and not as shiny?

Thanks in advance

You'd have to use abaddon black then use anti shine varnish,

Or you could go over the black with nuln oil, that will also take off the shine

Thank you! Yeah, I'm using matt varnish anyways to seal my models. Good to know that this will reduce the glossyness!

Yeah. You can also buy matte mediums which you mix into your paint to dull the shine.

Vallejo Model Color Black is a great black...very opaque, good flow and quite flat. Glosy finish is a weird choice for a black. I've never understood why
GW made a shiny black... flat finish is essential especially for a black.

Cool, thanks for the response. I'll actually be near a store that has Vallejo Game colours later and might check it out!

Oh yeah I forgot that I use vallejo black too! So much better than abaddon black. I opened my AB from the conquest magazine and it was terrible, coverage was awful compared to my vallejo. So I second that recommendation.

Corvus Black. It will come out matte, since it's intended for painting Raven Guard.

I'll second the suggestion to switch to Vallejo Model Color Black. I haven't looked back since I switched, and my Abaddon Black is just drying out in it's pot now.

GW paints are all satin-glossy in finish, so as others have suggested it is best to look elsewhere if you want a really matte finish.

I've been using Black 2.0 from Culture Hustle for ages now, and it's about as matte as you can get. Not the cheapest stuff in the world but I've only bought the one bottle and in nearly a year it's still mostly full.

I use Humbrol Acrylic Matt Black no.33, nice matt finish, decent price, available everywhere. Oh so familiar pots too

Abaddon Black is way too shiny for any of my needs.
