Having had some thoughts about my WHF collection these days, and started to wonder: what do others think about including new models into their old army? I am talking about stuff specifically made for AoS, used in the context of WHF 8th edition or older.

So sue me, but the GW announcement concerning "Warhammer: The Old World" got my hobby juices flowing again. I don't know where it will go, but for now I got me some Dwarfs out of storage and on the painting table. AoS is - and never was - for me, but I admit that some of the models done for it are pretty damn amazing. So why not include some of those Kharadon Overlords in my Dwarf army? I have similar ideas for my O'nG and Undead, and would love to know other opinions on the matter.

As a kickstarter:

Dwarfs
They were hit pretty hard by the AoS transition in my opinion. No more regular warriors or warmachines, what madness is this?! I guess some folks like Vulkite Berzerkers as a replacement for Slayers, but for me the whole visual style of them only works for singular character models. I would consider the Chosen Axes a nice "character pack". Kharadron Overlords have some lovely Master Engineers in their character range, in particular [urlhttps://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Thundriks-Profiteers-ETB-2019]Thundrik Profiteers as a rather cheap character pack[/url]. Also, assuming you are fine with some minor conversions, I'd consider the Endrinriggers a nice counts-as solution for Gyrocopters.

Orcs'n'Goblins
Again: lost lots, and gained little. How about a nice Black Orc character pack though, or a beefy new Wyvern? I am also pretty enthusiastic about all the new models for Nightgoblins - they basically got half their range updated. Just my personal highlights: Mangler Squigs in a reasonable material and the best Nightgoblin character collection ever!

Don't forget the Squighoppers set they brought out recently!

These are sure nice models, and I am planning to get them!

It's so odd, nothing against your enthusiasm for WHF brought back to life, but I wonder: Why did it need that push from GW?

Seems you liked, and like WHF a lot!

The new Slaves to Darkness models look really nice, but I'm not sure if they would fit in ranks due to the more dynamic poses.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

I have a very simple test for including AoS models - do they look like WHF models? If yes, I might buy 'em. If no, I won't.

A Varanguard - once all the trim is toned down and a few of the armour panels have been reshaped - makes a good Lord on Daemonic Mount. Many of the new Spiderfang releases fit into Night Goblins pretty seamlessly. A few of the Shadespire bands work great with the WHF aesthetic.

Kharadrons? Sheark Aeleves? Land Marines? Nah, they don't fit, at least to my eye.

Of the explicitly-made-for-AoS model lines, the only one that has parts that would fit into WHF are the Nighthaunt IMO.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?

Personally, i use quite a few models from AOS as old warhammer fantasy. As long as the model doesn’t look out of place in the old world, and can rank up.

I use Varanguard Knights as “undivided skull crushers for my warriors of chaos army. As well as a converted new Archaon as a chaos lord on a dragon. Had to get rid of those stupid fething heads on the new Dorghar model.

I use new Treekin models from the sylvaneth army for my wood elves

All the new night goblins fit well for fantasy

I mean, I never got rid of my Empire Army and most of the models are still available with a few exceptions.

As for my Ogres I guess a new Tyrant model is nice too!

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I have twelve armies, so the current sculpts has done a lot of good. I do not attribute that to AoS but the GW sculpt team. Though the new models are not constrained by old bases, though that need not count either. GW already made giant rectangular bases.

Now I have had to ignore official base sizes, and made my own 100x100 bases for the larger monsters, but I use them for WHFB and 9th Age (which is even stricter on bases, a rule a completely ignore).

Here is a list of major changes relevant to my armies since End Times folded.

Empire:
No new models

Bretonnia:
Vanguard Palladors - A good conversion base for a dynamic Hippogryph model,

Orcs & Goblins:
Various night goblin characters - More than we had before, but they all fit into standard night goblin tropes.
Squig Hoppers - Now in plastic, I don't use them because I don't use night goblins.
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Gloomspite-Gitz-Squig-Herd-2019
Squig Herds - Fantastic models, I had 'finalised' my O&G army long ago, then bought these on release.
I don't rate the Rockgut Troggoths as they do not rank up and you would need game breakingly large custom square bases. Frankly there are no decent non-River Trolls on the market right now. The closest I get are from Mantic and MOM Miniaturas, though the former are armoured and the latter have too few variations.
However a shout out for two orc models you should look at buying:
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Ironjawz-Orruk-Warchanter
The Warchanter has separate armour plates so you can leave most off, you will need to add some green stuff to his back, but it is easy to do. The model just fits on a 25x25
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Ironjawz-Orruk-Megaboss
This model is waaay to big, but he does fit on a 50x50 with a little reposing of his axe arm. Mine counts as a black orc warboss plus three orcs in his unit. Consider it like a unit filler base, for all intents and purposes its a standard infantry model, and dont let any goof tell you otherwise.

Dark Elves:
No new models

High Elves:
No new models

Warriors of Chaos:
No new vanilla models except Archaon and there is no need to be.
Numerous Khorne models, mostly from the initial rerelease. I only have third party reference that the Bloodbound set models fit on square bases, I have not done so. The Chaos Lord with pet Hound of Khorne can fit on a 50x50 like the Megaboss asnd under the same circumstances.
Some Tzeentch models.
Overall a big improvement, though as I only have a themed Chaos Undivided army I have only a passing note of the changes, frankly I don't like them. Whether they better fit Tzeentch Marauders or Tzeentch Beastmen is a matter of interpretation. You can go either way as you choose, and if needs be apply some head swaps to fit your aesthetic.

Vampire Chaos:
Lot of junk, particularly recently, and a lot of fugly. However the ghostly models are generally very good, many could be used as conversion base or as characters.
I wont list them except for
Grimghast Reapers - Best wraith models GW made.

Ogre Kingdoms:
Only one new model, but it is a good one.
Ogor Tyrant - This model does not fit a 40x40. I have not bought mine yet, though I have inspected the assembled model. I could try to place him on a 80x40 and take up the space of two ogres, but unlike the Megaboss this will likely cause problems, I could join two bases together only count models in base with one as attacking the Tyrant and have the other as a phantom ogre from his unit, but I don't like that. I could just put him on a slate base, but ogres are tall, so the usual pillar base getarounds dont work with the faction easily. The best option I think will be to repose the legs and spear and try and squeeze it on a 40x40. I am not sure if this is worth it.

Dwarfs
No new models

Daemons of Nurgle
I put my Great Unclean One on a custom 100x100 base, its just fits.
I do not use or rate the new Beasts of Nurgle.
https://www.minimonsters.eu/en_US/p/Plague-Toads/119
I use the minimonsters ones. They do need a 50x50 base, but that is OK by me.
I do also use a Horticulux Slimax on a 50x75 base, and cosnider it a Herald of Nurgle on Palanquin and fit him in a unit of plaguebearers.
Lot of non standard bases in my Nurgle army, but its fits together well, looks good and gets no complaints.

Daemons of Tzeentch
I put my Great Unlcean One on a custom 100x100 base, its just fits.

Lizardmen
The only line that GW ported over to AoS and its storefront intact. GW has not added any models to this faction, but then again it hasnt taken any away either.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

I'm using the idoneth dude on seahorse as a pegasus prince for my HE and fits well since I painted him on the same colours as my seaguard.

I also painted a few of the snake Medusa thingies stoney and they look great as ushabti archers.

Finally I bought the ghoul shadespire band just to have another strigoi vampire (the one with the halberd). Also got the other strigoi vamp on the column from the box set on a magnetised base (a 20 base that fits on a 40) to use it as a strigoi vamp with the crypt horrors.

Yeah see to me, a flying seahorse doesn't work in WHFB. Then again, I also thought the flying chariot from 8th was dumb as hell.

I'm going to get some of the new slaves to darkness models for my kings of war army. Since you don' thave to rank up on the trays and can make dioramas, they will be perfect and look awesome.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I don't think there are any new Slaves to Darkness models, except Archaon on dragon and the Varanguard. Varanguard fit on 50x50 as daemonic steeds and everything else was made for 8th and fits the bases. I had no problems with available WoC models for later WHFB, so long as you recognised only characters had visible marks of the individual chaos gods.

I will wait til my local store gets the Slaves To Darkness stuff before I make a judgement on adding them.

My main armies currently are High Elves, which between End Times and AOS might as well be squatted, and a Beasts of Chaos Minotaur Heavy army, which I can use tons of the range as most didn't change. The Tzangors are new, but I have no idea how they'd look mixed in.

Nothing, really.

Most of my whfb are ignored by AoS, so not much to do anyway. And even if I could add models, like for my Chaos Undivided/Slaanesh, the current GW miniatures are very ugly. I'd rather look into other companies that make more aesthetically pleasing miniatures.

But I will eventually make a Tomb Kings/Vampire Counts army, and will add those nighthaunt ghosts that will be released with the Mortal Realms collection to represent a Spirit Host (for a euro and a half, it's a very good deal). So those will be my first aos models purchase!

Honestly AOS has not provided my armies much of anything other than discontinuing most of them. I have really only two armies that are still in production that I can collect from them directly. Outside of that, nothing that I want and nothing that they are selling across the board.

Got me Zarbag's Gitz from Shadespire (I think) as a nice addition to my Night Goblins.
Also picked up the banshees released for AoS (€12 for 4 models - it really was a steal) for my Vampire Counts.

Those new wolfriders seem cool too. Might pick them up later, together with some squigs.
I kinda like those new sniffer-squigs too but I don't know what to use them as.
