Hey, so I've been out of 40k for a long while. I've started rebuilding an army. What would be the most efficient set up for a Tac/Dev squad Sgt that would still be effective? I generally create my people WYSIWYG.

If you play Tactical squads, try to match your special weapon with the same combi on your sergeant. Like plasma gun and combi plasma.
Dev, if you play them in pods, why not, otherwise it's probably better to keep the sergeant cheap.

Magnets, of course is the easy answer.

What you plan to do with them can also make a big difference. backfield campers don’t need a power sword, but an aggressive forward squad might get some milage from a CC toy. There are so many options it’s hard to give specifics. Think about their squad, what you plan on doing with it, and how the sarge’s gear can help. Combi to match the squad is classic for Tac for a reason.

Stombolters double your firepower for a small investment. Chainswords are a free extra attack, and probably more useful than the pistol.

Storm Bolter at max. That's it. He's gonna be a disposable body eventually.

Keep note that Combi-Flamer is tempting for protection of Overwatch, but he'd be the only one hitting anything and in general it isn't good.

Typically my rule is keep em cheap. The squads heavy/special weapons take priority. I keep my Sergeants/Champions ranged, sticking to the basic Bolter, upgrading their gear only if points allow. Despite the higher Ld, they usually just become bullet catchers for the heavy weapons.

Storm bolter is best choice IMO. Dev sargent is probably going to use signim so give him nothing.

If we fail to anticipate the unforeseen or expect the unexpected in a universe of infinite possibilities, we may find ourselves at the mercy of anyone or anything that cannot be programmed, categorized or easily referenced.
