On the datasheet of the Imperial Defence line I read that after being set up, it should be treated as terrain feature and not as enemy or friendly model. I don't really understand how it is treated if an infantry model wants to get from one side of the trenchline to the other?
Is this possible at all? If so, do you just measure movement directly or does the model have to climb like 1 inch up, 1 forward, one down, etc. to get above the trenchwall?

And regarding vehicles: as it is a terrain feature after setup, is it legal for a vehicle to end its move on top of the trench?

As with all terrain features, you measure up it, then over it, then back down it, to determine how much movement it takes to cross it.

Standard for terrain is that you would measure up and then down. Exceptions being ruins which Infantry can move through the walls of, or if it is defined as being impassable. You would not need to measure up and down if the unit has FLY either.

And what about the vehicle part? Can a vehicle end its move on top of the trench?

Why shouldnt it ?? Its a terrain piece. Models can move up terrain, move across it, then move down. You can park a LR on top of a container. It can also park on top of a trench.

Generally speaking yes, thoughcheck rules for individual terrain pieces. Vehicles cannot end their move on top of ruins for instance.

What about a 2" trench? 25mm bases fit and would measure down and over and up to cross, but a rhino could still technically be on the flat part before going down and span the gap?

Given the deliberately vague nature of the terrain rules, agree wit your opponent before the game if you own and use such a terrain piece. Logically, yes, a tank could cross it with no/smaller movement penalty, but that’s up to the two of you to decide.

For me, the joy is in putting some good-looking models on the board and playing out a fantasy battle - not arguing over the poorly-made rules of some 3rd party who neither has any power over my play nor will be visiting me (and my opponent) to ensure we are "playing by the rules"
