While an IG officer is with his squad, can he be picked out as an independent target in close combat?

I thought no, because the codex says that he is attached to a squad and that if his squad is wiped out he reverts to being an independent character. But someone else told me otherwise.

Thanks for the clarification.

Hmmm... I'm still not convinced.

It does say that he is an independent character, but it also says that "If it [his squad] is wiped out, he reverts to being an independent character."
Reverts from what?

Reverts from being an "upgrade character" (page 50, rules) ...

"Upgrade characters are fielded as part of units from the start of the game, representing a squad leader or unit champion. They are effectively another trooper..."

...to an actual Independent Character?

En Guard:

In 4th edition they have changed the way an IC works with a retinue (see page 51 of the rulebook). Unfortunately, the writers seem to have simply assumed that people will ignore the old 3rd edition codex verbage (that you've pointed out).

So yes, you are correct per the RAW.

However the truth of the matter is that most players recognize that IC characters with retinues from 3rd edition codexes fight seperately in CC.

And believe me, you don't want to play with the interpretation that ICs with retinues fight as part of the unit. While you think that will help your IC survive what you don't realize is that it opens up your opponent's ICs to be much more potent (and untargetable) in CC.
