Just wondering if anyone out there started collecting and was then influenced by the lore from another faction to jump ship?

just coming back into 40K this year and strafed the most popular factions as I like to be somewhat unique, and I also like to play mono dex lists so I went with Admech. and I love the army, aesthetic, and the new toys the army as got lately.

But I've been expanding my 40k background and have enjoyed the Eisenhorn, Blood angels, and night lords series.

although I thoroughly enjoyed all of the above, and Devastation of Baaal made me look at Tyranids with a whole different respect. the ADB Night Lords books have made me question my faction choice. I'm thinking about shelving the admech for a latter date (As said i still love them) and pick up the CSM dex and give the night lords a nudge.

So if anyone out there has done this, did they regret the choice?, or did it draw them deeper into the hobby by going with the new found faction love?

I don't think lore has ever made me, on its own, want an army fully. The models have to also interest me, otherwise the lore can be the best ever and I still won't want to spend days putting together models I dislike.

However I find that lore often helps support my interest within an army once the models hook me.

It's the same for artwork and even games. The visual and story based aspects can help spark and direct the imagination; letting it run wild within the setting and the faction.

So for me whilst it might not be the first thing its most certainly part of the deciding factor. More so now than in the past I would say as well. I'm much more likely to dip into BL novels or Inferno and suchlike now than in the past when I got into the game and most of the lore I read was either White Dwarf or Battletome/Codex/Big Rulebook level.

Nope

I try hard ignore stuff I don't like - pretty much the last ten years of Wolfy Wolf Wolfness and and EMO Dark Angels.

I do enjoy most of the lore of 40k but then I look at some models (Centurions, Stormsurge, Santa Logan), lore (McMurdy Murder Dreadnought from Planet Murder) and bleech it from my mind.

I AM A MARINE PLAYER

When Tau first came out way back when I immediately jumped ship because I liked the idea of playing a faction that was unambiguously 'the good guys' and that I could root for without qualification.

Then I switched to Warmahordes when that came out and discovered that I liked playing an unambiguously bad guy better because I didn't care about my men getting killed anymore, so once Warmahordes died in my area and I returned to 40k I went right ahead and got back into Marines since 40k doesn't do unambiguous good guys anymore and I never stopped loving the Marine model range.

No.
And I don't jump ship. I merely add to the collection/my play options. I have a lot of options on my shelves.

I'm all about the models. If they make enough models I like in a range then I'll build a force. Or add to one now days....
But as far as I'm concerned GW could write gold/gak/anything in-between, or even nothing at all(!) lore wise.

Lore has got me into another army but not jumping ship. back in RT I started w Salamanders and I loved them, but when the Squat army list came out, crazy biker gang dwarves had to be aquired.

when I came back after the great squattening, I started back up with my Salamanders. Forgebane made me take a look into Admech and now I've gone off the deep end. then I started looking at Ynarri(never really liked them back in the day) & I really love their lore but it's a hot mess currently(blood of the Phoenix was an auto buy until I saw the price). then damn shadowspear drops with killer looking chaos sculpts/lore so...started a chaos marines.

I have always loved the lore for Sororitas but was 100% against metal models, so when the box was dropped I had to pick one up.

Dark Angels for me. Used to be fairly happy with the boys in blue, but after being reintroduced to Dark Angel lore in their 8E codex, I turned my back on the Utramarines and don’t intend to go back.

Chaos Space Marine dedicated to Slaanesh

I second not jumping ship, but simply collecting another option.

Lore makes me really want an Emperor's Children force. When I started the hobby, I thought space marines were ugly and generic and boring and would never appeal to me - but reading Horus Heresy books gave the featureless suits of armour personalities. Annoyingly, I don't like the look of noise marines, and it seems Emperor's Children in 40K is mostly noise marines. I'd be fine if they were just a small part, but it feels like the variation of character isn't present and it's just LOUD GUITARS AND NOISES WOO which doesn't appeal, and I don't like the bikes. But I love the look of some of the stuff in the CSM line, like the Heldrake and Forgefiend, and the CSMs themselves. But I don't want chaos undivided. So for now I'm just sticking with Slaanesh demons.

So yes to the lore making me want to pick up another faction, but no to switching, and if the models don't appeal to me I don't get them.

Hmmm. My first armies were Chaos and Orkz based on their lore, this was back in 5th edition.

I was there, the day the Horus Heresy books arrived on Terra.

Afterwards, I became a typical Marine fanboy. Chaos mostly, but I liked a few Loyalists. Been that way the last decade. My Chaos army has grown, my Orkz are a labor of love, but the Space Marines always felt out of place...

And then.... Dark Imperium. The novel. Totally changed my perception of Roboute Guilliman and his role in the 40k storyline and the greater Imperium.

Now, I still haven't painted a single damn Space Marine in my decade of collecting, but when I finally get around to it, I'll be making them Ultras.

(Maybe a successor... I always liked the Genesis Chapter.)

To expand a little.

My Chaos force is a mix of Night Lords, Alpha Legion, and Iron Warriors. The Alphas are from 8th edition, but the rest have been IW and NL since no rules 6th edition. Metal batwing helmets and shoulder pads on all of them. Even went out of my way to get some Beaky helmets to recreate that picture in the codex, of the Night Lord holding a Bolt Pistol to some poor slaves head.

Inspiration: Lord of the Night, and Storm of Iron.

My Death Guard have been around since the 3.5 book. Lots of metal plague marines. Flight of the Eisenstein is still my favorite HH book, and I love any and all bits of DG lore.

On the flipside, I think alot of the Eldar lore turns me off of them as a faction. To each their own of course! Papa Nurgles blessings to all.

I was going to make some standard Cadian army, maybe a mechanized Steel Legion list, but when I opened the 8th edition codex and saw Scions and read more into them, I started building them.

I initially started Thousand Sons from 30k (with some 40k models thrown in) because I thought of them as Loyalists who were wronged and unwittingly became Traitors through events that played like a classic Greek tragedy.

Then I read "A Thousand Sons" by Graham McNeil.

I changed my 30k army of Thousand Sons to Ultramarines, and am likely only going to keep enough Thousand Sons for Kill Team.

The lore of Guardsmen got me into them, and continues to be a driving force in my enjoyment of them.

The previous lack of lore behind the Tyranids had always been a turnoff for me.

The change in Necron lore in 5th edition drew me to them, and I came within a hair of starting them... but decided I wanted to start a Melee army instead (already maining Guard). So I started Blood Angels / Red Marines instead. Wish I hadn’t, but didn’t know at the time.

I love Ork fluff, but hate painting them more than I hate painting other minis, which is a shame as I also enjoy playing with them.

Were I to restart Marines, I’d go Sally’s for the fluff and crunch.

the scraps of lore i keep track of do usually help with my interest in a faction. at the same time, it can take away from it as well, because very few factions do i like the look of most of the models. i mostly only like faction infantry.

when i first got started it was sisters or bust. but after i got them happenstance made it so i couldn't play them. ever since ive been at least a tad bitter about it and some model and lore things have been bugging me, so my eyes have now floated to other factions. problem is, no faction i REALLY like the lore of plays fully to how id be on the table.

Right now im really interested in Custodes, and I also have ALWAYS liked orks. the issue is my mindset screams Tau to the highest degree, and i think in range and how much gun i can use in a list. this makes things difficult, because i also can't just test these armies to feel out what id prefer until i find folk to play again.

Doesn't stop me from theorizin' though.

Yes, in 5th edition I played vanilla marines. After reading more and more lore though and seeing pictures of peoples' boss conversions, I ended up switching to chaos and converting all my vanilla marine stuff.

Now I play my favorite unit's army from CSM, Plague Marines!

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

It was never the lore, but always a new model (line).

3rd edition had me collecting Tau and Daemonhunters in addition to my Black Templars.

Custom40k Homebrew - Alternate activation, huge customisation, support for all models from 3rd to 10th edition

Designer's Note: Hardened Veterans can be represented by any Imperial Guard models, but we've really included them to allow players to practise their skills at making a really unique and individual unit. Because of this we won't be making models to represent many of the options allowed to a Veteran squad - it's up to you to convert the models. (Imperial Guard, 3rd Edition)

I have once: From CSM, too R&H.

The only thing that is or was regreteable, was the drought of rules support and now model support.
Otoh, the faction would be so diverse that you are preety much getting away with "your dudes" the likes you never have seen.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Yes. I loved the Ynnari lore and it made me paint up an army of Harlequins (with various bits-swaps from other Eldar to make them a bit more spikey) with the Yncarne.

I never much cared for the Eldar lore, which was largely the tired "super-civilization-of-ancient-times-well-past-their-prime" trope from standard fantasy. It all only ever revolved around stuff "thousands of years ago" which I didn't really care about.

Ynnari brought Eldar into the "current" lore of 40K and gave them active agency.

Unfortunately, the army is unplayable atm, so I just play Marines like everyone else.

But I hope and prey one day I can bring them back to the table again.

I don't know if it counts, but I used to have plans to get into Necrons, but lost all interest with the braincron lore.

Oh and I guess Space Marines. Had no interest in them for 25 years until Phobos marines came out. They badly needed something like that for the longest time.

@ OP:

Yep, Night Lord trilogy was great.

Congratulations, sir. You chose the CSM faction with the best paint scheme. I have been collecting them since 2nd and never regretted my choice.

I finished reading Konrad Curze by Guy Haley yesterday. Though it wasn't stellar like ADB's NL books, it entertained me nonetheless. Whenever I delve into 40K lore it is a joy to see the difference between it and for example Star Trek. While the latter is all clean and people strive to better themselves the former revels in stagnation and doom.

Right in the beginning of the book the author sets the tone for the action:

The bridge of a decrepit salvage freighter stank of unwashed arses, bad breath and foul farts.

Now that's a future to look forward to.

Can't start what you already have- i still currently own a decent batch of metal sisters, as i didn't think they'd actually do them in plastic, just to be proven wrong a bit later as they made the announcement. I move between between wanting to sell them or keep them, mostly because I don't know if they actually mesh with me properly and the fact i shouldn't have gone for them in the first place the way i did it. plus i don't know the odds on anyone buying up the metals, since the plastic is about to arrive in full force.

I jumped in entirely based on the lore knowing nothing about the army or how they would play.

I'm new and only have orks currently. I love their models and absolutely love their lore.

From all of the lore I've heard from the rest of Warhammer, I have no sympathy for anyone. The Emperor is a giant tool and everyone who worships his corpse can suck it. If the Imperium of Man falls, good!

That being said...I watched a lore video series on youtube and now I adore Rogal Dorn and the IF! I'm not switching from orks, ever! But if I pick up anything that comes with SM, you can bet I will be painting them yellow!
