I am a very new painter, so I am looking for the best wash to use for my Ultramarines or frankly anything.

Nuln oil I heard was alright, but any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

What do you want..

A shade? A Wash?

All shades may be washes but not all washes are shades.

Shades are meant to darken while a wash can do many things but primarily tints with a translucent color layer to achieve a specific goal... which of course may be shading.

If you wish to pull down your highlights and unify the model in the blue spectrum you would use a Blue Wash of the hue you seek to enhance.

If you wish to shade the blue before you highlight you'd want a darker color either the shade color compliment of your current color or just a darker color of what you have...

Nuln Oil is a Shade. A very dark brown shade (it ain't black people).

A functional equiv would be dark tone in the Army Painter line.. which is also good stuff.

You could use Army Painter Blue Wash to blue up your model and make the tone more rich or...
use Citadel Guliman Blue Wash.

It depends. So if you want a universal shade, Nuln Oil is probably the best, as it’s neutral. But it can leave some colours looking very oily, and on lighter colours can look way too stark, so you’ll want to water it down for lighter colours, or invest in some other shades down the line.

Another good universal one could be Agrax Earthshade. It’s almost as dark as Nuln but is browner, so it is great for any warm colours you have, or for making other things look a little war torn/weathered. Again, you’ll want to water it down for any lighter colours since it’s so dark.

The others are a little more specific, tending to be for lighter colours or colder tones, etc. so they’d be good to branch into the more you get into painting. But those 2 mentioned above, imo, are the best for starting out as universal shades.

I hope this helps, and welcome to the painting hobby!

Bodt

For ultramarines you want drakenhof nightshade. That's a dark blue wash/shade.

Thanks for the replies!

I am probably going to highlight before I shade, so most likely Ill get a blue shade.

GW always uses Nuln Oil as a wash on their Ultramarines tutorials.
