Subject: Hive city terrain (hotel)

Another piece done. My inspiration for my hive city has always been the foundation of a tower. The lowest areas, where the people make their own living space. My idea is the tower above would be supported on massive pillars sunk to bedrock, and this would form a hollow cave like area. The outcasts, the rebels, the scum would migrate to these dark places and build their own city out of whatever. In this case, using the broken, rusting remains of the towers themselves. Some of the buildings would span multiple levels of the sub basement. Anyway, I've added a "hotel" to the mix. Certainly a dicey area to stay, but we sure aren't building a Hilton down here. I've placed some of my process below the pics if you care.
Pics: (the last showing a partial of the table) As usual, pics of the rest of this table in my gallery under Hive City and Hiveboard.

https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-102599-61558_Hive%20City1.html
The base metal/broken pillars are actually broken sign posts (I am an engineer for the county, it's my job to make and fix signs). They are galvanized, so the rust you see is my painting. Decent and I'm happy. Nothing special. Primer black, coat with steel, random splotches of copper. Rust: Brown dabbed in random pattern, over that a bright fire orange dabbed on in random pattern, washed in red.
The Hammocks are cast off rag/shirts. I cut to size, folded in half and put a single stitch on each end about 1/3 from the fold. I then folded the ends back over itself (so the stitch was now inside) and poked a ring made from wire through the ends to get the hammock shape and let me hang them. stain them with some watery paint, cover with watered PVC so they hold shape, it's decent.
The Hotel sign is premade, lasercut, found a whole sheet of various signs out there. Someone had a tutorial for doing the wire and making it look neon. I still suck at that, but whatever. I always put posters and trash about, it is a hive city.
Any other comments, questions, please post em. I'm no expert or pro but I love talking terrain and find it fun and easy. Pretty proud of this table and the time and effort it has taken. My third done. Have a snow/trench board, and a desert oasis board. Pics in gallery somewhere.

Thanks Insaniak, you do a lot of really awesome stuff, and share great tutorials. You've been one of my inspirations.

I've stayed in worse places... Automatically Appended Next Post: I think it needs some streaking though. Get some oils or enamels and run them down the sides, from under the signage etc.

Some nice looking terrain you got there.
I'm liking all the fallout flavour.

like the overall look, but the scale in term of consistency is off, looking at the hotel size, then the ladder for example.

Big Mac: You do see that the "hotel" is not a high rise but a girder with hammocks hung outside? Or do you mean the Hotel sign itself is too large? The theory was not that this is a building in itself, but something used as a support for the cheapo hotel of hammocks. the girder is supposed to be nothing more than a massive girder supporting the floor above (it it hadn't broken/melted whatever)The ladder is scaled for 28mm, as is all the add-ons such as lockers, hammocks etc. This is for my 40k board.
@ Queene anns revenge: Good idea. Learning process for me and I've never used oils. is there any secret beyond put and let drip?

if that's your intention, then I think the building itself is way too tiny for a hotel, motel or even hostel, the interior size is about couple elevators, if your meant to have it as a partial, then the building could use some broken areas, as of right now its too much of one whole derelict building. hammocks are pretty dangerous to get in and out of. these are my initial observations.

I’m pretty sure there’s no interior at all. The hotel is just the hammocks, as far as i can tell.

So for oils, you use a brush to apply a line wherever you want your streaks. Leave it for a few minutes, days, whatever you want.. Oils take ages to dry, then take a flat wide brush with mineral spirits/thinners on, and run it down the lines to feather them out and make them more natural looking. Automatically Appended Next Post: I like the design! I like the idea of a shanty, Jerry rigged place to stay in the slum. I like to think there are hammocks or beds inside the structure too, as if they've cut into the support and bolted bunks into the metal.

Going to try that streaking Queen Anne's revenge!
And indeed, my intention was for the girder to be nothing more than a girder exactly as is. The hotel IS the hammocks outside. there is no interior, it is just a support girder for the floors above, someone has used to hang their hammocks and make a buckazoid. (I actually thought that was clear in the explanation attached to the pictures. Apparently not.)
Although, i do wish I had got some bunk beds inside, that would have been cool.

Really great stuff, and great innate storytelling.
If I have any minor suggestion, it would be to add a little more detail to the tubes holding the outer end of the hammocks. A few bands and nuts will make them look a lot less like straws

That's amazing both for the modeling and for the concept. Here's your hammock 8 floors off the ground, sleep well.

Thanks Kid Kyoto. I have to admit, this is partially a stolen concept (no surprise) There is a B movie called The Blood of Heroes (not great but cool concept in a post apocalypse world) that has a "hotel" that is a massive wall like a stadium seating turned into beds/hammocks.
