GW 40K Sector Imperialis "ruins" on the table, with multiple levels. Each one was on a base. He said ITC says the entire base counts as "ruins", and everything on the bottom floor was line of sight blocking for shooting, but infantry models can freely move through the ruins. You can also "assault" though the bottom floor. Seemed a bit odd, but OK.
ITC Ruins just say that the first level of the ruins blocks line of sight, and that you only count fully trapped windows/doors for this. So a door that's open, but there's a solid wall all around the frame, will be completely opaque and you'd ignore being able to see through it (the door counts as closed). Same for a window that has a solid wall all around it (counts as boarded up). However, areas that are NOT enclosed would treat line of sight normally. So if there's a low-wall section that opens to nothing, then that does NOT block line of sight.
Otherwise, there's no other rules that are different from the basic rules of the game. The basic rules of the game suggest that a Ruin on a base means you count the entire base as the ruin for purposes of claiming cover (+1 to armour save rolls that aren't
Inv saves). Basic rules of the game are that infantry can indeed ignore walls of ruins for moving and charging.
A few things came up during the game:
1. He had a lot of "exploding six's" effects- If a 6 is rolled during the fight phase, it generates another hit. OK. So he would roll to hit, then reroll 1's or misses or whatever. Then he would roll the extra hits due to 6's, and on these... he would reroll the 1's or misses (depending on which character was closest). Question Do you get to reroll the dice on an exploding dice roll if you have already rerolled the dice that generated the extra hits?
Yes, he gets to do that. A new attack is generated that exists independently of the previous one. Death to the False Emperor does prevent these extra attacks from themselves generating further extra attacks with. Crazy thing is with Mortarion you can roll with the triple-attack profile, and every 6+ allows an attack, which his triple-attack profile turns into THREE more attacks. Yes, this is very good with the right buffs.
2. Can you advance after a reserve deployment and then assault? Is that some ITC rule? These rules seemed to have changed a dozen times since the rules dropped, and it seems ITC has added more.
ITC has not added any rules here, but I don't really know what you're asking. If you mean can you advance after arriving on the board from reserves the answer is NO.
GW has clarified that units arriving on the board from your reinforcements cannot be moved again either (you cannot Deep Strike Terminators and then cast Warp Time on them to have them move). However, you CAN still charge with units that arrive from reinforcements.
3. Can Victrix Honor Guard intercept mortal wounds? He argued they could not, because the Victrix says "wounds" not "mortal wounds".
Yes, they can. Their ability triggers when the Character they're close to loses a wound, regardless of how they lose that wound.
4. This seemed very dodgy to me. Flying Deamon prince on the ground floor of the above mentioned runes. I can't shoot it because no line of sight on the first floor. He then charges a unit with the flying deamon prince through the "walls" and I can't overwatch because I have no Line of Sight? The Flying Deamon Prince isn't an infantry model, and he has flying so he just ignores all terrain? Flyers can just "move through" ruins even if they are not infantry?
There was a change here a long time ago. Previously, a model with Fly indeed ignore intervening terrain, and it was like "jumping" over the terrain, with the vertical moving using NONE of your charge range. Movement during the Movement Phase is STILL like this, so in that phase the Daemon Prince can indeed seem to move through the wall with no penalty because of that Fly keyword. However, it was changed now such that Fly only allows you to ignore intervening MODELS, not terrain. These models with Fly now need to account for the vertical distance up AND down a wall/ruin in order to charge someone on the other side. Do note, however, that such models with Fly can still jump over intervening models, so they can bypass infantry screens and whatnot.
5. Can psychic powers from one detachment be used on another detachment? Same as Command Points- can one detachment use the CP's generated by another detachment? I thought ITC said no on that one. /shrug
Yes. This has been the case for the entire edition, so no change here. Some people do wish that
GW did this differently, but that has never been changed, and I wouldn't expect it to be changed.
Didn't have much fun this game as two of his models (Moritoran and his Flying Deamon Prince) killed every model I had in my army except 3 Eliminators and 10 Intersessors, they got mulched by a 10 Plague Marines that had high T and multiple saves. I don't have the Death Guard codex, but damn. Seemed like he had more special rules and saves then any army I have ever faced. I really don't want to go buy the Death Guard codex just to make sure this was all legit.
Getting back into the game after a while can be frightening. He probably took this mean mix of stuff because he heard how good the new Space Marine codex was. Still; I'd never recommend bringing big stuff like Morty or a Knight in against a newer player. Sounds like he played his list well though, and really made sure to maximize the powers and overlap that he has access to. Many armies have access to similar things, and I'm sure you'll find a bunch with Marines (who honestly have many more overlapping bonus abilities if you build a list to take advantage of them).
