Thought this might be a nice friendly thread that also works as a reminder that there's lots of different priorities we each might have, and that GW needs to bear them all in mind when releasing stuff.

Note: I'm asking which aspect you find most fun, not necessarily which one you consider most important, or spend the most time on, or are best at doing. Just, like… which one always puts a smile on your face while doing / enjoying it?

My answer is scenery. I absolutely love making scenery. There's lots of other stuff I enjoy, and enjoy quite a bit. It's not the be all end all for me, but I just always have a good time doing it; coming up with ideas, thinking of ways to turn repurpose ordinary junk, setting my models up on the scenery and looking at the little world I made. I desperately wish I had a bigger place so I could just keep full boards set up, and make more of it.

I don't have the space to make scenery but I would if I could. I just like making models that tell a story or are in the act of something. Also making army lists at work in Excel because it looks like actual work.

the setting itself.

I haven't had a game with the army i do have due to not knowing where a game is locally anymore in some time. im horrid as a painter or modeller, despite my want to convert being some of my most powerful ideas, and my budget is far to restrictive at the minute to act on them, partially because ive always been the type to count every dollar, so the games a bit much for my blood, as it where.

So most of my time with this is reading and watching the setting go as it does, and then posted matches and drinking in gameplay. i look at it almost like research, to see how things work, then what does or doesn't. the last 2 days ive been on a rush collecting data on GSC, lore, conversion concepts and gameplay to get a feel how they play, all of it.

if anything kept me coming back, it's the setting. by a long shot.

Army: none currently.

That reminds me:

Just to be clear, by "friendly games" I don't mean it's necessarily a casual one, just that it's being done with friends or pick-up at an LGS rather than in an organized, ranked competition.

I enjoy the game, lore and aesthetics well enough, but for me, messing around with a scalpel, glue and plastic is a tier above - just feels great to *make* something (and the interchangeability of parts for my chosen faction of dill weed torture elves helps a lot, too)

Gap filling is darn annoying but I find it more on the constructive side so less soul crushing than mould lines (that is unless its a mega super nasty gap then its soul crushing)

Gap filling all the necromunda DU wall pieces really destroyed me for a week.

So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

Im ever so sorry but the option of "crushing my enemies into the dirt and enjoying lamentations of their women" is missing?

Asking for a friend..

Jokes aside, I love modelling and converting.
Making things is rewarding.

Easily building the models, even if the conversions are stupid simple.

Honestly the most fun i've had in gaming - either on the table top or online has been because of the people i'm playing with. It almost always has nothing to do with the actual game.

I'm voting for modeling/converting, but just to clarify.

My enjoyment of the modeling side of the hobby is almost impossible to separate from the lore. The ability to tell a story through your miniature, combining an expansive background with your options at hand, making sense of the model through the encyclopedia of continued lore of a given setting. I do other artsy craft stuff, painting and modeling both, so what I get from the hobby is something special. It is not just the painting, the sculpting, the modeling, terrain making, the shared storytelling with fellow gamers or gaming opponents or the gaming itself, it is a combined mix, heavily, inseparably tied to the fluff.

Mold lines are so unpleasant and I think my eyes are getting bad because I'll think I cleaned a model before sending a pic to a friend then see a tectonic plate faultline running across a leg.

Nothing wrong with that, bud. Sometimes the simplest tweaks make for something really nice. One of my favorites is a blocker on my Black Orc blood bowl team who’s smashing a ref who threw a flag at his feet. Gotta pick a scheme for these guys.

I think, in a weird way, that one of the things I like best about the Primaris line is how modular it isn't. If I want a Primaris Captain with a power fist and plasma pistol it's not just a matter of swapping the arms out, and the puzzle of figuring out where to cut things so they mate together just right without having to sculpt anything is incredibly satisfying.

Certainly my second favorite part of the hobby, and I know it's not just because 40k is balanced like hippo on a unicycle. Warmachine had much better inter-faction balance and significantly more tactical game-play and when I was still playing it I b----ed about it every little bit as vehemently as I b---h about 40k now.

The option is there, it's just labelled "tournaments".

A lot of board games and tabletop games have me scouring through their miniatures to find one or two that I think are really cool.

With 40k, if I don't like something it's really easy to remedy that with a knife, a file, and some spare bits.

This is a tough one. The whole thing comes together to make it fun to me.

I probably like assembling the models most.
Listbuilding is also fun. Figuring out what I want in my army ect.

I voted for modelling/converting, but it is a bit squished together with painting. Currently I have a lot of fun kitbashing and converting all kinds of Minis and vehicles for an feudal/feral guard regiment. And I also very much enjoy seeing all those crazy orky conversions you can find in the galleries. I really love their aestetic and I think if I ever get bored with my Guardsmen, the next army I build will be greenskins.

Anyone who has an Ork army and isn't going nuts for conversions and kitbashing...

...is basically like someone buying the most expensive Swiss Army Knife out there, just for the corkscrew.
