Hey y'all, I've been toying around with a small IG army and just kinda grabbing stuff when I see it. I'd like to know people's thoughts on what they find to be a fun style of Guard to play as it seems like it's just tanks and dudes. So, just some basic questions to start out with concerning the units I currently own.

--How do you feel about low cost Lemans? Is it worth it to throw down a Battle Cannon and 3 HBs for relatively cheap or should they be kitted out and the cheapness saved for disposable Infantry units?

--I've been thinking about throwing a Vet squad in a Chimera with 3x Meltas and an ML (or any HW Team), is that too squishy or should the Chimera get them where they need to go?

--I've picked up some Kasrkin pretty cheap. Would it be worth it to throw them down as Tempestus Scions with small teams of special weapons squads or just stick with IG Vet squads? Also, if it is worth it to field them, should I keep them in Valkyries/Vendettas or try to find a good Taurox alternative...? because I'm not a fan of the model...

--Are Command squads worth the points? I've played a few small games and they always seem to get blown off the field first thing for some reason.

I guess I'm just kinda floundering about looking for a cohesive theme that's fun to play. I have a few extras in Sentinels, a Vendetta and a couple Armigers but otherwise just a bunch of Lemans and Cadians. My main opponents play varying Chaos and Tyranids with the ocassional Orks/Wolves. None of us are super competitive so I'm not sweatin an optimized list or anything.

LRBT is solid with 3 HBs;
vet with 3 plasma, HWT suffer from movement penalty if the chimera moves;
there are taurox upgrade kits, Victoria miniatures has 4 wheel suspension version, eBay has 6 wheeler, halftrak, 4 wheeler and 8 wheeler, though the latter 2 aren’t as good looking, search keyword ‘taurox wheels, or taurox conversion’;
Right now command squads are not competitive at all. More infantry is always good.

Given your user-title, maybe explore running them as Renegades & Heretics?

Be aware though, that IG/Astra Militarum is a vastly more capable and powerful Faction on the tabletop.

In a bit of regurgitation of what I've found/heard:

-Cheap Russ Battle Tanks are fine. I typically run three along with 2-3 Tank Commanders. You will absolutely want the Tank Commanders though. For a chunk of change, you get an order and BS 3. Also, don't forget to use the Vigilus Emperor's Fist detachment to get a better Battle Cannon on one Tank Commander, and have the ability to move full speed/advance and still fire your cannon with the strategem.

-Vets with Meltas in a Chimera: Done it before. It's a fun bomb, but no where near competitive.

-As far as I'm concerned, Kasrkin are Scions. I won't play against anyone who says otherwise. Cadia Stands!

-Command Squads and Veterans will be the first things shot off the board if you bring them. Specifically because their BS 3, more special weapons (read: Plasma) and ability to take orders can make them punch hard. Command Squads with Banners also get prioritized as they boost morale

See if you can get a Basalisk too. Those are the only things we have that can effectively and efficiently get rid of Eliminator squads, which can snipe all of our officers and characters. From out of Line of Sight.

Our strength right now is good Tanks, cheap infantry, orders, tough melee blockers (Bullgryns with Psyker and Priest support), and Artillery. Flood the objectives with bodies, use the Tanks to kill things that mulch our infantry quickly (Primaris squads, some Tau mechs, etc), use Bullgryns to block tough or rather killy melee units, and hold the line.

I do have a Priest and a Preacher. My next purchase was going to be Bullgryns to use with the Vendetta and have them dropped off behind enemy lines with the Preacher to wreak havoc. So I'm glad to hear they can be effective. I hadn't thought at all about getting Psykers though or about the Vigilus books so thanks, I'll def look into those things as well.

Honestly, its a lot easier just to have a 4th Bullgryn. Less to remember, same damage output, more survivable, only have to make one charge roll.

On Kaskrin/Storm Troopers/Scions (I use my Inquisitorial storm troopers flying valks with heretic iconography for undercover ops ), use the Viglus defiant formations rule and have them in Valks.

My favourite formation is a battalion of 2 storm trooper commanders with rods of command and one with the warlord ability ‘Grav Chute commando’, 3 squads of sarge with plasma pistol and 2 plasma, and a storm trooper command squad with 4 plasma, all loaded into 2 valks with rocket pods and at least one with heavy bolters.

On the turn they leap out every unit within 6” of the warlord hits on a 2+ and their special ability to get an extra shot occurs on a 5+. They can’t overheat as they have +1 to hit. Depending on the target I will order them to re-roll wounds or re-roll ones (re-rolling 1’s that’s roughly 29 wound rolls, though vs toughness 8+ you are better ordering re-roll wounds).

Survivors hop back in turn 2 and you do it again turn 3. Having at least one valk with heavy bolters lets you get the most out of the Aerial Fire Support stratagem which allows you to use Valks hitting on 4’s to overwatch for a squad being charged. And the valks are nifty as well, with heavy bolters and rocket pods they put out 6+2D6 str 5 -1sv shots and 3 multilaser shots.

Other fun things include packing an officer of the fleet for 20 points to give the valks re-roll 1’s when targeting a unit (I like to bring a vulture for the intimidation effect of rolling 40 dice) and/or an astropath to strip cover off a unit and either mortal wound something or make a valk -1 to hit while it is hovering.

For 1000 points you get the above and a Valk bullgryn bomb, which will hopefully soak up firepower. As a bonus you have exactly 1 unit drop so that helps with getting the first turn…

I'm not sure what regiment you run, so do keep in mind that my list is designed to follow the fluff of the DKoK. So far I'm 9:0 with this list at my local FLGS.
