I'm trying to figure out a good way to run a campaign that avoids some of the pitfalls I find campaigns typically run into while also providing what campaigns are often popular for.
What I find people like about campaigns:
1) The ability to spend points out of game on benefits in-game
2) A map that shows where they're fighting, and reflects what's on the board
3) Unusual missions
What people dislike about campaigns:
1) one team snowballing out of control after a few wins thanks to permanent campaign benefits. Nobody likes fighting your custom T8 W9 Sv1+ A12 S9 space marine captain who's gotten 50 upgrades.
2) Having to commit to playing every week for like 12 weeks and having the available playerbase dwindle over time
3) never getting to fight the most interesting battles because they keep fighting over the same territory week after week
4) people outside the campaign feel excluded because they don't want to join in midway and fight vs super upgraded OP armies
So, with those goals in mind, and the great diversity of terrain we have available where I play, I created the Warzone Campaign. See doc:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jx3qx8LQQlB6pTpgnfadDi1d0dYSFlYJeBKE1Ec8W5A/edit?usp=sharing
Basic structure is:
-Limited-scope campaign. Maximum 6 weeks if eveyrone is having fun and wants to continue, minimum 4 weeks.
-You get to purchase benefits using the points you scored in your last game only, points not spent are lost. Only persistent benefits are tied to the map tile you're fighting over, so you may not necessarily get to keep them but your team will.
-Most campaign benefits are related to winning the mission rather than crushing the enemy army. Players who are not regular campaign players who agree to jump in and play as "free agents" get direct combat benefits like free relics, free CP, extra points in their army, etc.
-Map primarily exists to drive the rules in the mission/on the terrain board rather than dictate who can fight who.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

Mysterious Forests can make two wounded models in a single unit. That causes issues.
Can Field of Miracles give more than one die if you use more than one unit, or one unit across multiple turns?
Overall... Great fething gak, that is some solid work! I love it!

Added a line to mysterious forests: " If this results in two or more models having less than full wounds remaining in the unit, the player controlling the unit may choose which takes save rolls first when the unit is targeted."
Field of Miracles specifies that a player may select one unit in their turn. If the miracle die is not spent, it is possible to have multiple dice set aside by using the rule multiple turns in a row.
Thank you for the feedback! If you notice anything else, let me know.

Can't access the doc from this computer, but concur on the thrust of what you have written. Once the current Necro campaign finishes I will try and get a 40k one going where the benefits apply for a game and are environmental or additional, rather than improving certain models.
