The Silent King: "Alright, let's get down to business. Carl over from the marketing department is coming in to show us the results of testing with the general public with regards to how our new, immortal bodies will look like. Take it away Carl!"
Carl: "Ah, yes! So, we ran this by several test groups and thought we should look like skeletons with no facial expressions whatsoever and have any no distinguishable biological sex."
Royal Court Member: "Woah, hold on! You mean to say that we will look like the dead?! The very thing that we don't want to be?! Go on... I'm listening..."
Carl: "Yes, in fact, no one will ever remember having made that decision, as their very soul will be stripped away from their bodies and become a mindless being."
*ahem*
All jokes aside, what in the hell were the Necrontyr thinking in making their living metal bodies into skeletons?

^Because they were jealous of the long-lived races. Hated them so much that they chose their image to be the embodiment of death.
But we actually don't know what they looked like in the first place anyways.
Or maybe they were a bunch of goths.

I think we do. I’ll try and find a pic later.

See that stuff above? Completely true. All of it, every single word. Stands to reason. |

We don't, it's all guess work from the fans. I do know one part of speculation was they had tails. Something to do with the Skeleton shape implying it. I don't remember.

Their choice was a horrible, painful, cancer-ridden death or immortality. The C'tan didn't advertise that they would lose their souls, personality, and freedom. Maybe they thought it would be like the liquid terminator in Terminator 2? Living metal morphing into whatever form they wanted.

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all
Armies in disrepair: nothing new since 5th edition oh how I want to revive, but mostly old fantasy demons and some glorious Soul Grinders in need of love |

Didn't that get retconned by Ward as part of the whole giving them an empire thing? They just started war with the Old Ones to unify their race because as we all know, war is never a controversial thing and 100% of every country is in full support of it at all times.

I don't know if it's still in line with the current fluff, but in 3rd edition, the Necrontyr were described as extremely morbid and fatalistic pre-transformation, calling their space vessels "tomb ships" and so on. I imagine their society was chokeful of death imagery (mortality being so omnipresent in their daily life and all) so choosing a skelettal form as their new bodies kinda makes sense.

In other words, they got skin cancer from their star even though they didn't even have skin? That must have really sucked.

I imagine that, rather than being a stylised human skeleton, this is actually what they looked like - emaciated long faced barrel chested bent kneed aliens that hated dying so much they ended up in metal bodies unchangingly mimicking their hated living forms
