Yes, the latest one.

Has the best missions for actually playing the game and most updated point costs.

If you're not playing CA19 40K, you're definitely not playing the best 40k.

not really. battlescribe has the points.

missions are good but depends on if your gaming group actually will play them or not.

I picked it up but i pick up all the books for the art and/or bits of lore to read.

if none of those are your cup of tea though its not a manditory addition.

My LGS has one copy available for all to use so i never had to buy one.

If you play at an LGS, try talking to them. Otherwise, you could talk to your playgroup and buy one as a group.

As goofy has said, battlescribe has the points so youre really only buying it for the missions/narrative/open play parts of it (the actual CA, not the munitorum part)

If you're using the points in a new book you should own the book.

If I ask you to show me the cost battlescribe is not proof.

You should keep it that way.

I was gifted the 2018 CA, haven’t bothered to use it once, though I’d like to try the character-building rules. For points, I use BattleScribe. No interest in new (or old) missions, don’t really see the point of them honestly.

I use the missions a lot, handy for that. Not worth RRP, but I picked up 2017 for next to nothing on ebay, so...

Right!?

If you're in a serious tournament fine. But if you pulled that in my FLGS you'd get more than a few raised eyebrows, and probably struggle to find any games if you only played people who had all the books with them.

Battlescribe is fine, get over it. If you find an error help everyone and report it.

You don't need it, as long as somebody you know has it, I'd say.

That said, if you're going to play competitively, you do need to have it. Tournaments like and usually require you to be in possession of all the books relevant for your army. Whether you'll actually ever need it is another story, since while it's one thing to crack your codex to look up a rule, hopefully the points costs being legal was checked by the TO's when you submitted your list and you don't need points costs anymore, but by convention you should have it.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Need? Absolutely not.

I don't play with points, I draw my games from the Open War deck, and the only things from CA that have appealed to me are the custom character rules and suchlike.

You don't need it. If you play with points a lot, probably a good idea to have the latest, but if that's not a concern for you, don't worry about it.

deploy two armies play till one is dead, could be a way. the rest I could imagine would involve drinking games, but as those are played after shop closes I am not sure how they work. I think you could also play games where your opponent picks missions out of their books.

I think a lot of the supplement books that came out after the CA have point amendments in them. So if someone only wants to point changes for their army, they don't have to buy a CA.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

I asked this question the other day (well what is chapter approved) and we worked out that as I have the enhanced edition codex on iOS the points are updated in line with chapter approved. But I can’t comment on other aspects of what CA offers

CA contains new datasheets for potential new units/amended sheets.

It also contains potential new stratagems (mission specific or game specific not army level most of time).

But most importantly it has the latest approved and recommended missions to play.

It also helps that CA 2019 is generally agree'd to have the most fun missions GW has done for past couple years. So Although you don;t HAVE to have it, it;s recommended that you do so you can read the missions/stratagems etc. Because Although I'm happy to allow my opponents to use my book for a game or two, if my book is the main use for everyone I get annoyed and it becomes less enjoyable for me. Especially because finger prints start making their way on to the pages and not everyone respects books or other people property in the same manner.

So also out of politeness for others, i'd recommend yes, buy your own too if you are playing the missions regularly.

If I may hijack this question a little: Let's say I've already decided to pick up the latest Chapter Approved; is there any value in the old ones anymore, or are they completely redundant once the new one is released?

Given you can get them very cheap on the secondary market, I'd say there is some value.

I picked up CA17 about a year ago for £5, and I still use it regularly for missions. That has had value for me.

Some of the missions, narrative content and datasheets could continue to be relevant, but it'll be down to how much use they are to you on a personal level really.

Some of the old stuff is still good and not yet reprinted anywhere. Cites of Death still has the nearest thing to good terrain rules that GW have published. Mostly this will be the open and narrative play stuff, although I would rate 4/6 of the CA18 eternal war missions as still good and worth playing.

If you can pick up an old one for a real bargain price then why not. Do not pay anywhere near full price for it, not worth anything like that any more.

The design of each CA is to replace the old one. Like an annual update. For example workshop in tourni's will never hold missions from legacy CA's.

So my response is no, it's not worth the cost.

I disagree on this point, the missions just add more to the pool and that's a good thing.

Very few people will play tournaments at GW, so that's unlikely to be relevant to the majority of people. Though if it applies to the OP then fair enough.

There are some great missions in the older CAs though, that shouldn't be ignored.

The only reason to buy CA is to use the missions in there.

I have CA2019 and I don't think I've looked inside the points book beyond flipping through it when it arrived.

You only need points for building lists or discussing units. For both applications, there are better tools available than an error-ridden piece of paper.

If you like the narrative content of old CAs, pick them up. Those parts are not replaced in any way.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Pretty much this, with six objective markers on the table so it isn’t 100% “Kill the other army”.

You're missing out if that's what you do. The CA 19 missions are legit really fun, especially with Ritual of Damned PA. As they have world rules like living terrain.
