Today I was watching a game and one of the players stated a rule that really didn't seem to make sense to me.
The enemy unit (Black) was in combat with friendly units (Red) and (Orange). Friendly (Red) unit wanted to "fall back" to the right and then backwards out of 1" range.
The friendly player was told he couldn't "fall back" to the right past (Black) models, because you must first move out side of 1" and then finish your movement. They concluded that (Orange) unit would have to move first to allow (Red) unit to fall straight back.

I have looked over the rules for falling back, and when asked they said "It has been FAQed", But I haven't been able to find anything that states that.

Falling Back rule:
Units starting the Movement phase within 1" of an enemy unit can either remain stationary or Fall Back. If you choose to Fall Back, the unit must end its move more than 1" away from all enemy units.

They were incorrect. There is no such FAQ. In the future if they cant find it they've probably got it wrong.

During a fall back move at any point you are fine to be within 1" of any enemy models right up to the point you stop. The ONLY condition it gives here is that you must END the move more than 1" away, it's totally fine during the move.

It is possible to prevent an enemy from falling back, but to do that they must be completely surrounded (whether that's by enemy models, friendly models, impassable terrain, or the edge of the board in some combination).

If you must first move more than 1" from Black, how can you possibly do that since if you move 0.0000001" you'll be within 1" of Black?

When you fall back you're allowed to move within 1" of any units you're already within 1" of, you just must end your move more than 1" away from any of them.

And yes, whenever someone says "An FAQ says this", ask them to prove it. Trust, but Verify.
