I'm going to get a couple of whirlwinds for a upcoming list and not sure which version to use.

Note that I'm a DA player and this is for a non FW tournament so Thunderfire Cannon, Rappier Carrier and Whirlwind Hyperios aren't available options.

I'm oscillating towards vengeance because even tough it has lower fire rate and is slightly more expensive (5pts), the AP makes it more likely to kill the target, the 2 damage makes it better against enemies with +2 wounds (around here a lot of players are bringing primaris to the table) and the increased strength makes It more versatile.

It very much depends on your list, I run them in a BA army that needs to kill chaff screens so I can drop in and assault the good stuff so Castellan works better in my army.

If you already pack a load of bolters and such then in our current marine/vehicle heavy meta the Vengeance seems a solid pick.

Ya, that would be list dependent. Generally you will be faxing a lot of energy Thunderfire Cannons, do you have a plan to deal with them outside your own artillery?

I prefer the vengeance launcher in most situations. In the devistator doctrine its str 7 ap-2 2dmg. Vs a lot of enemy targets you may face this is the sweet spot.

Guard heavy weapon mortar teams bothering you from outside Los? Not anymore. Basilisks? They die quick to these. Terminators, primaris, bikers, all these things will fear the vengeance whirlwind. Even eldar flyers need to be aware of them because a lot of their flyers are t6.

With 2 of them and the strat to fire again that gives you 6d3 shots to pound on a target for relatively cheap points. Expect your whirlwinds to get targeted quickly.
