I have vallejo polyurethane varnish. I have heard that thinning acrylic varnish with water will make the end result cloudy. Can one however thin polyurethane varnish with water, or will vallejo airbrush thinner(whose main ingridient escapes me) be better?

Vallejo PU varnish is water-based, just like the PU primers. I've thinned using nothing but water with good results, but I've only ever used their gloss. Issues of cloudiness usually arise while using matte products. Their airbrush thinner has a surfactant and a bit of drying retarder, I believe, but nothing particularly special - nearly all of their products are water-based, not alcohol- or lacquer-based, so the usual products will thin it. As always, do a test on some scrap if you're worried.

I would've guessed at vallejo being water based. Best thing to do is give it a try and see what the results come out like.

I had quite a few problems with the PU matt varnish, It didn't dry with an even finish and I used water for thinning. Maybe it was a bad batch.
