now I want to admit my rule book hasn't shown up yet (its in the mail), so if this is clearly stated in the book id like to apologize in advance for asking a dumb question.

My Ork force will be lead by a Big Mek in Mega Armour. Id like to put him in a Trukk with 5 Meganobz. Is there some way combining the Big Mek and the Meganobz into a single unit? Having the Meganobz and Big Mek in Mega Armour be a single unit would make life much easier for the purposes of transport, movement, and to keep the Big Mek from getting singled out in the fight phase.

thanks all
-Matt

Now, charachters can't join squads anymore, however they will be untargetable if any model of your army is closer to the shooter, exception for sniperrifles.

You can also just throw him in with any other squad you might want to transport.

A Mostly Renegades and Heretics blog.
GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Characters do not join units anymore. However, transports can carry an unlimited number of units, they are only limited on the amount of models they can transport. So you can slap your Mek with Meganobz into a single battlewagon no problem.

that's good to hear that the Big Mek can ride in the transport but at the same time I may need to rethink this strategy.

if my Big Mek goes into close combat along with the 5 Meganobz then what is to say the enemy doesn't focus that entire unit on the Big Mek killing it off.

from the sounds of things, characters should avoid close combat.

Physical space. Only models within 1" of the Mek or within 1" of a model within 1" of the Mek can attack the Mek.

Yeah, it's often not too difficult to keep a character behind a unit, at least until the unit is killed!

The real thing you should worry about is whether the opponent will be able to wrap around the transport before you disembark, as this can be extremely bad.

Other models keeping as many models as possible not in b2b or within 1" of model in b2b with mek.

E E E E E E
M N N N N

Here only the 2 leftmost E(enemy) could target the mek(M). Rest are attacking nobz(N).

Not that much different to previous edition either. Not like independent characters back then were untargeatable in melee either.

Assuming in your diagram that the second enemy from the left is within 1" of the Mek, the 3rd enemy is actually eligible to attack the Mek too. Because you can attack if you are within 1" of a model from the same unit that is within 1" of the enemy.

Apologies if I've misinterpreted your diagram though.

It does mean if the enemy fights in a second rank theyd probably get 6 or more models attacking the Mek though.

Styx is correct, but that is what careful placement of models in close combat is about.

Besides, unless the unit in question is actually good on close combat, you want them trying to kill the Mek since he has lots of wounds to soak up the odd point of damage.

in my original plan the Big Mek would have "Da Killa Klaw" and "Might is Right".

These would be his modified stats:

M: 5"
WS: 3+
BS: 5+
S: 6
T: 4
W: 5
A: 4
Ld: 8
Save: 2+ (5+ invulnerable against shooting)

Da Killa Klaw:
S: 12 (Sx2)
AP: -3
D: 3
Ability: You can re-roll failed wounds

Kustom Shoota:
Range: 18"
type: Assault 4
S: 4
AP: 0
D: 1

If it helps, you can download the core rules for free from the GW website before your rulebook arrives:

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-AU/Warhammer-40000-Rules

It doesn't include things like rules for constructing a Battle-forged army, or how to use stratagems or warlord traits, but it's useful for getting a grasp on how the basics of the rules work.
