Hey all

I'm trying to make a model idea fit the rules given in Chapter Approved 2017 for Land Raider variants using points values - because myself and my gaming buddy don't use Power Level for army composition, even though we mostly play "Open Play"...

Basically I want a 2x Twin Heavy Plasma Cannon, 1x Twin Assault Cannon, and Storm Bolter armed Land Raider...

I noted that all the variants given in Chapter Approved 2017 are 30 power level. So, I took the Terminus Ultra points value as a starting point as I guess that's the most expensive and the only one given a points value in Chapter Approved 2017. I took away the points for 3 Twin Lascannons (150pts), 2 single Lascannons (50pts), and a Hunter Killer Missile (6pts), and that leaves 44pts. Have I got that wrong or is a Land Raider with just a Storm Bolter really only worth 44pts?

By that logic, also, when I add the 2x Twin Heavy Plasma Cannons and 1x Twin Assault Cannon, my variant Land Raider will only cost 179pts - doesn't seem right?

There is no RAW answer for this because what you are doing is not possible.

However, you most definitely have that wrong because the points have been updated since 2017.

For example, a Blood Angels Land raider is 19 PL and starts at 239 points. (Which is the same price for a Land Raider in the Index Imperium 1, but CA 2019 updated this).

A base Land Raider in Chapter Approved 2018 is 200.

CA 2019 has Imperium Land Raiders starting at 180

So I would start @ 180 and add weapons from there.

Because the Datasheet for the Land Raider does not list "Twin Heavy Plasma Cannon" as an option for weapons.

Because there is no official conversion of PL to points. Any you come up with will necessarily be a house rule between you and your buddy.

Simply adding on weapons and the points for them doesnt really cut it a lot of the time, because the value of a unit is a function of all its features combined. While GW dont always seem too consistent in pricing things, any method that isnt an official way to price it (which doesnt exist for custom land raiders at all) is inherently somewhat arbitrary. I think they knew certain combinations could theoretically be overpowered, and that's why they limited the whole custom land raider to open play and just gave it s blanket and exorbitant PL cost - so they didnt have to balance it, and instead say it's for "just for fun" games.

We can come up with things that seem 'reasonable' but ultimately there is no rules based answer to your question.

Basically, talk to your friend and decide between you what you want to do. So long as both players are happy that is all that matters.

It doesn't list single lascannon, or twin helfrost cannon either, none of the variants already published outside of CA 2017 do.

I thought that the idea in those rules was so you can come up with your own variant regardless of what weapon options already published variants have listed. Although having said that you still have to assume that yours will be 30 PL in Open Play if you use PL.

Yeah I get that. Using the points values already published doesn't seem unreasonable, or imba, though. The variant I described above costs 292pts - probably the most expensive variant.

I was pretty disappointed in the custom Land Raider rules in CA17 - very limited. I was hoping to have the option of a all-the-plasma-all-the-time version of the Terminus Ultra - A Terminus Caliban if you will. Maybe one day I'll do it anyway...
