iv heard that most tournaments or house rules involve limiting attachment numbers to avoid cheese, was wondering what this typically consists of, im thinking of imperial soup and might want several detachments

I think the standard limit is 3 detachments at 2000 points.

It varies by point size. 2 at 1000, 3 at 1001-2000, 4 at 2001-3000 IIRC. Above 3000 play the Apocalypse™ Game™ System™ for Large™ Games™ of Warhammer 40,000™ with its own Apocalypse Dice™, and Rules™, and they are not compatible with Warhammer 40k™ rules™ at all.

That said, you can use the same minis I guess.

It's not a house rule as such - page 214 of the main rulebook. Most events stick to that, but check with your TO / the event pack.
