Plastic Beach

So after decades of loving the Gaunt's Ghosts series, and just as long daydreaming about a Guard side project to make some Tanith Ghosts, I finally decided to take the plunge.
This is my first hobby blog so I'm keen to document as I go.

Let's get into it. I've had the Gaunts Ghosts squad for 15 years, and after a decade hiatus from the hobby, I stripped off the previous owner's paint, and started compiling bits to make a select few characters. I wanted to make the units clearly lighter than regular cadian infantry, and there's a lot of Cadian kitbashes of Tanith I don't like. Victoria Miniatures has the best 3rd party bits for a Tanith light infantry kit, and she was immensely accommodating of my specific requests to get the parts I wanted. Most of the remaining bits come from Genestealer Cults, Cadian and Catachan sets.

Collating all the descriptive info I could find as I re-read the novels, I designed each character to be as accurate as I could. Straight away, I knew I had to redo the GW Corbec model, due to size alone. Some of them like Corbec, Kolea, Soric and Brostin are the strongmen of the regiment, so Catachan parts worked a treat.

I was also keen to diversify the list, and on two occasions (Ghostmaker and Necropolis) we see the Ghosts riding outrider bikes. The GSC jackals were too good an opportunity to miss.

It's been a labour of love, and taken a huge amount of fiddling about to get the most dynamic poses. The bikes were especially difficult to get fluid poses without using the GSC parts. I haven't used any green stuff, and sculped gaps only with varieties of glue and more plastic.

Very keen for C+C on the project overall, and whether you can tell who's who in the zoo from the pics. let me know what details I've missed.

And yes, there are a couple of mainstays I'm yet to complete...who's missing??

The original GW models, currently half way basecoated

Feygor & Rawne: Feygor looking unfriendly, and sporting the mine he uses in the 5th Compartment. Rawne looking snake-like, and carrying a bunch of tube charges.

Mkoll & Corbec: Mkoll crouching with his hand cupped to his ear, and a suppressed carbine. Melted the cloak to bend it down for him. Corbec is holding a modified carbine to fit his stature, and otherwise outfitted similar to the GW version.

Agun Soric & Tona Criid: Soric has a wounded eye, axe-rake and a fateful canister on his waist. Criid is all action pose with her skeleton stock Vergasite carbine.

[Thumb - NessaBrostinDomor1.JPG]
Nessa Boura, Brostin & Shoggy Domor: Only change to Nessa is some fine sculpting to remove medals. Brostin is decked out with custom (GSC heavy) flamer, flask shades and lho stick. Domor had his eyes drilled out to be replaced with the optics from AM/IG H

[Thumb - VarlKolea1.JPG]
Varl & Kolea: Varl has a bionic shoulder, and throwing knives, and looks like rakish. Kolea is burly and impetuous, and has a mangled rear head and neck area.

[Thumb - VarlKolea3.JPG]

[Thumb - MerrtDalin1.JPG]
Merrt & Dalin Criid: Merrt has a lower jaw made from a flamer nozzle, and a "repossessed" lasgun waiting for a stencil to be painted on the side. Dalin is sporting his adopted father's beret.

Miscellaneous troopers. Suggestions for names?

I always love to see tanith stuff. Hands down my favorite book series within the universe. Very cool conversions, there's a lot of personlity to be seen.

I've wanted to do the same thing using victoria bits to recreate the ghosts of tanith but never got around to it. The bits are perfect for it.

One thing though, some GW heads seem a bit weird on the victoria torsos. Like the scale is a bit off.

But hey, Tanith ghosts!

Looking great, mate! I love me some Gaunt's Ghosts and wish that GW would make them again as new proper plastic models, but your conversions are doing them justice. Glad you've already done work on my favourite character, Major Elim Rawne. Looking forward to seeing more!

I must have totally missed them using bikes.

It was in one of the short stories in Ghostmaker, it was about Bragg leading a truck of supplies. Mkoll and a few others were on bikes as outriders.

I was actually very aware of this, and designed each around the available bits. So you'll actually find there is no single model that uses GW heads on VM bodies and arms, and vice versa, due to their size. Merrt comes the closest, since he's got scrawny arms, but he's on a Cadian torso. Oh actually, Rawne defies that rule, but he's got a small head from the Cadian command squad.

Cheers mate! I was waiting for someone to pick out my Rawne actually. He's the one model I don't like. I wanted "snakelike" features, hence that head, and he's always lobbing tube charges, but I'm not super keen on how the model is posed. Looks a bit awkward. Any suggestions?

Yep that's right, and the Ghosts are also introduced in Necropolis as riding in flatbeds into the city, with the outrider bikes flanking them For me, it was a good excuse to diversify the central character line-up, and put Meryn and Caff on the quad together! I came very close to getting a Jackal Alphus and making Merrt the super sniper, as depicted in that chapter, but the bionic jaw and traitor's lasgun combo was too tempting.

3 more named characters in the works right now!
