I should probably know more about these dudes as they will compose such a big part of my BA Army. Anyone able to tell me much about them--and why books do they feature prominently in?

They were originally Sanguinius's personal bodyguard during the GC and HH. I don't know how many there were originally but there are listed as being 29 in the Chapter just prior to the attack on Baal by the Tyrannids.

Only 1 SG survived the Devastation of Baal. He was promoted to Exalted Herald of Sanguinius by Dante and tasked with rebuilding the Gaurd. Dante noted that it should not prove hard to find BAs of exceptional valour amongst the survivors.

Just read hat they all got wiped out on the vengeful spirit with papa sanguinius, bar one--Azkaellon. He went on to create more of them somehow, and every BA successor chapter has one.

It's the thing for all the elite bodyguard units - Abaddon was the only Justaerin to survive the final battle with the Ork Warlord on Ullanor, for example.
