I’m wondering does a specialist detachment warlord Trait take the place of the normal Trait or do I get both?

Tell me, how can a specialist detachment warlord trait take the place of the normal trait, when it costs 1CP The normal warlord trait is free, the specialist detachment warlord trait cant be used on your warlord. You do get both.

Last time I checked, it become an option on your list, not a replacement. With Field Commander, I believe you can only take the Warlord trait from a specialist detachment.

If the truth can destroy it, then it deserves to be destroyed. |

Almost, but not quite. This is misleading (and quite condescending).

You have a few options:
- You may take the Warlord Trait associated with your specialist detachment as your given Warlord Trait.
- You may instead take a different Warlord Trait as your given Warlord Trait. Then, you may use Field Commander to generate the Specialist Detachment Warlord Trait for an eligible character.
In any case, a single character may not have more than one Warlord Trait (barring certain Space Marines chapters, but that's really neither here nor there).

Right, you can use the specialist warlord trait, instead of the free one. And you can use field commander to give another eligible character the associated specialist detachment warlord trait.

In conclusion, the specialist warlord trait is a warlord trait only available to characters with the appropriate specialist keyword. If used on your warlord, it is your warlord trait. The Field Commander stratagem always you to put the specialist warlord trait on an appropriate non-warlord character.

Be careful not to confuse "the actual warlord" with someone who buys a trait (like a scion tempestor, or a field commander strategem, or even a superheavy detachment's knights) and isn't that same priority target for the enemy. (And be sure to point out which are which pregame!)

This answer is confusing and condescending. Try speaking clearly instead of policing other people.
In response to the OP: as you probably already know, each army can have a warlord, each warlord can have a trait. Specialist detachment warlord traits (SDWLTs) expand the number of traits available to your warlord. They can also give a second character a warlord trait. But in no circumstances can a character have more than one warlord trait.
- If your warlord is part of a specialist detachment, the warlord can take that detachment's SDWLT or any of the other warlord traits available to him.
- If your warlord is not part of the specialist detachment, the warlord cannot take that detachment's SDWLT.
- You can use the field commander Stratagem to allow a character in a specialist detachment to take the warlord trait for that specialist detachment. No other options allowed. You do not have to take the SDWLT.
Does that make sense?

There's a very real danger of us entering an infinite regression here.
