Bought the Warcry starter box when is was released, and so have the terrain that is now sold separately. It is a daunting amount of plastic, and I've not had to paint anything this large before. So my question is the above; paint on sprue, or assemble first? The former has the advantage it is easy to base coat the flat surfaces, and the sprue can be used to handle the piece. Of course, one then has to assemble and touch up the final piece. Also washes are more difficult as gravity will not work for you, but rather the wash will puddle in the center of the wall etc.

So, suggestions for tackling this?

Painting pretty much anything on the sprue doesn't work, for precisely the reasons you've mentioned above.

Assemble it, then stick it to a paint handle, either pre made or improvised.

I would recommend assembling first, I did this too. And I can recommend painting the stuff with contrast paints, if you want a quick and passable paintjob.
