Not played much before the social distancing but got my kill team books out last night and
was reading in the elite book about sub-faction with Chaos marines

For example, the Emperor Children allow only Slannesh keyword to join the units.
Damenettes have that keyword, so you could use demons in a chaos marine list with that sub-faction?

No. See P60 - choosing a kill team.

For matched play all models on your team must share a faction keyword and your team must be battleforged which means that all of the models you select from your roster must share a faction keyword.

For Narrative play you can mix faction keyword on your roster but the missions require battleforged teams so you still have to pick only models that share a faction keyword.

Chaos Daemons and Heretic Astartes do not share any faction keywords.

What the legion traits are talking about is restrictions within the options for CSM - if you take emperor's children then you can't have berzerkers, for example. When they get around to including noise marines you won't be able to take those in World Eaters.

Also, you can assign any mark to most models (excluding things like berzerkers that must always take a particular one). Which mark you have determines what tactics you get access to (there are a bunch of new ones in the Annual if you don't have that yet). So, you can't be emperor's children and have some models that get access to the slaneesh tactic and some that get access to the khorne tactic.

That's the answer I was looking for... GW really needs to clean up its rules...

The rule here is simple - no soup.

If you want you can mix factions on your roster in narrative play but since you still can't mix them in a team you really don't want to do that.
