I wanted to do something a bit different for today. Rather than post a single list to let people tune it up, I figured it would be fun to drop a small challenge to everyone. In this case, it's for “the White Dwarf Special”, army lists that are built for CASUAL play, designed to both A) take on all comers and B) look and feel like what a 'typical' force would look like in the fluff and which isn't designed for some awesome “tourney CRUSH!” power. You know, the sort of list you used to see Jervis johnson bring into White Dwarf (where, invariably, he'd lose, but hey.)
So I'd like to see as many people as possible toss a list here, with some basic commentary if possible, with the following guidelines:
1000 points. (a small enough game that you could play in a few hours but big enough to look good on a 6' x 4' table)
1 Battalion (only one detatchment, so everyone gets 8 Command Points. Use 'em wisely!)
No named/special characters. (Small battles that don't attract giant names.)
Most of all, try to take up the spirit … nothing tryhard, just a casual bit of fun, to relax with friends or show new players how cool the stuff is.
For instance, I'll start with my submission, the Ultramarine Half-Company (999 pts)
Spoiler:
HQ and ELITE– 226 pts
Captain with Bolt Pistol, Power Sword, and Frag and Krak Grenades (Warlord: Trait - Master of the Codex) (Relic - the Sanctic Halo)
Librarian with Bolt Pistol, Force Sword, Frag and Krak Grenades
Apothecary with Bolt Pistol, Chainsword, Frag & Krak Grenades
TROOPS – 438 pts
Tactical Squad (10) all with Bolt Pistol, Frag and Krak Grenades.
7 with Bolter. 1 with Flamer, 1 with Missile Launcher, Sgt with Chainsword
Tactical Squad (10) all with Bolt Pistol, Frag and Krak Grenades.
7 with Bolter. 1 with Flamer, 1 with Missile Launcher, Sgt with Chainsword
Tactical Squad (10) all with Bolt Pistol, Frag and Krak Grenades.
7 with Bolter. 1 with Flamer, 1 with Missile Launcher, Sgt with Chainsword
FAST ATTACK – 154 pts
Assault Squad (10) all with Bolt Pistol, Frag and Krak Grenades.
9 with Chainsword
Sgt with Power Sword
HEAVY SUPPORT – 181 pts
Devastator Squad (10), all with Bolt Pistol, Frag and Krak Grenades
5 with Bolter
2 with Heavy Bolter
1 with Lascannon
1 with Plasma Cannon
Sgt with Bolter and Signum
“Why Ultramarines?”
Because they're the 'default' marines so seemed fitting.
"Half-Company?"
With a full company being 60 Tacticals, 20 Assaults, and 20 Devastators, I wante dto see if I could get half of that (30/10/10) into a thousand points. And you can! It's light on support units, like transports, Dreads, and so on, but it's Codex-approved all the same.
“Why those Tactical loadouts?”
Because for decades, that's what Tac Marines came with. It's not the best selection, but it's long been the “take on all comers” tactical squad default found in every starter box.
“What's with the Devastator loadout?!”
It's a mix of weapons that the Tactical marines didn't get, just a showcase honestly. It's a grab bag worth of being on the cover art of a Devastator box.
“How does this force work?”
Not terribly well, but it's a classic!
The tactical Squads break into combat squads, with Sgt and flamer in one half, missile launcher in the other... the Sgts advance to take objectives while the missile teams hold near the backline, spreading out to keep LOS for any armored units. They can stick and move if needed after the first round.
The assaults break into combat squads, possibly deep striking depending on the terrain. They're not kitted out with special weapons, so are intended less for vehicle/character hunting and more for disruption of backline shooting units or finishing off wounded units near the front line.
The devastators should be taken as two squads, to have two sergeants, but, we're going fluffy, so a single ten-man with one sarge. It splits into two combat squads, one getting lascannon and a heavy bolter, the other getting a plasma cannon and a heavy bolter, with the sarge going with the lascannon if the opponent has a big heavy unit, like a leman Russ, or with Plasma against power armored foes, like Chaos. The spare bolterbodies will keep the big gun going.
The HQ Units are support units, there to make everyone better. They're both pretty basic, kitted for close combat via Heroic interventions if needed, but more for the aura (captain) or snuffing psychic powers (librarian). I'm still torn on the Apothecary, who could be swapped out for a basic LT, who is better, but I wanted a bit “fluffier” in the mix and harvesting the geneseed of the fallen is important. (I squished the Eliete and HQ units into one point cast to conceal the exact cost of the Apothecary instead of having the Elite on its own, as a nod to the point rules here.)
Anyway, that's my submission. I look forward to seeing what the rest of y'all bring out. Let's have some fun! Casual, fluffy, and light is the goal. Join in!
Well here's my attempt a list ive been thinking about for a bit of fun
I call it the in yo facemarines!
Pretty simple everything deploys right in the face of the opponent and get to scrapping asap, the assault and interceptors deploy turn 2 after its all gotten a bit messy
Unsure if this is super legal list me just comming back to the game to be honest but I do like the idea of it
I've gone for a Biel Tan aspect host led by an Autarch.
I've also gone for max squads mostly since it seems to me that shrines should have more than four followers most of the time.
I think it's good for capturing the surprise element of the eldar, a small patrol of three squads, a couple of bikes and a tank grows pretty suddenly as the dragons jump out, the hawks drop from the sky and the scorpions strike from the shadows!
Obviously it won't be a super strong army but I think it's pretty fluffy.
This is my list. 1K(998) of Craftworld Eldar or rather... CORSAIRS! SPACE ELF PIRATES GALORE!
This is actually a list I am currently in the process of converting. Using FW corsair bits, old school Eldar Chainswords, AoS Shadow Warriors, Drukhari accessories and more. I love their lore, and it was a perfect subject for an extensive conversion project. Incidentally, it fulfills this challenge perfectly, in my humble opinion.
Oh man, I LOVE this one. I always loved the aspacets and them done up like this? Just awesome.
Thanks, any excuse to play around with an eldar list is alright with me!
Senserazer, love the look of that project. I did something a bit similar with my storm guardians, basically a grab bag of eldar bits and bobs, mostly guardians but with dark eldar and Harlequins stuff too, totally not WYSIWYG but I love them.
1000 points, and you aren't letting the gaurd guy bring 3 battalion? Sheesh. Ok, elysians it is then.
Air mobile Battalion Elysian
3 valkyries 2 multirocketods and 1 lascannon each(-3cp for giving them all advanced countermeasures) 393 (its a squad, so if you are counting things deployed on the board, 1 and 3 in deepstrike)
2 elysian company commanders
....(one has aux grenade)
....(one has powrsword and bolter pistol) (Warlord)
1 Inquisitor with inferno pistol and chainsword (-1 cp for warlord trait = extra psy power and -1 to wound relic)147
1 elysian platoon commander with powerfist and aux grenade lasgun
2 elysian command squads
... 3 greande launcher and 1 medic
... 4 grenade launcher
officer of the elysian fleet
astropath 155
3 elysian 10 man regular infantry troops
... plasma rifle, powersword, and plasma pistol
... plasma rifle, powersword, and plasma pistol
... plasma rifle, powersword, and plasma pistol 198
3 elysian heavy weapons squads
... 3 missle launcher
... 3 missle launcher
... 3 missle launcher 105
998 points!.
Warlord is the ely comp command with powersword and boltpistol. He holds an old grudges. His relic is the laurels of command, I guess. I am on the fence is a pregame point would be worth it to have the aquila on the other commander. Starts with 4 command points -- but I think that they were well spent on the valkyries which may hang aroudn a while.
Would this list fit in your power level? Turn zero, the troops themselves are offboard in dropstrike, but the special weapons squads, inquisitor, heavy weapons squads, officer of the fleet, and elysian command officers are distributed on the 3 valkyries, to take advantage of "I am harder to hit than you expected" It migth not totally blunt the modern alpha strike but its going to be hard for alot of 1000 point lists to take down that many valkyrie before something, somewhere, gets to step out and fight.

That's certainly not a *traditional* Guard list, but hey.
It's all good in here! I'm happy to have anybody join in!
I'd love to see your take on, say, classic Cadians. Yeah, only 6 Troops choices is gonna sting, but a Leman Russ or two should gobble up those points the troops leave on the table.

Thanks! I had to source the Chainswords on eBay, they're from way back, rogue trader era. Storm Guardians are so horrible I felt like I had to atleast give them their best possible loadout. Hahaha

It was TOO a traditional gaurd list -- just an elysian one. So ok, classic cadians? No problem, you must mean this one, right? cadians.
Spoiler:
company commander (old grudges/relic of lost cadia) company commander company commander command squad with 2 grenade launcher, 1 missle launcher command squad with 2 grenade launcher, 1 missle launcher command squad with 2 grenade launcher, 1 missle launcher veteran squad with 3 grenade launcher, 1 missle launcher veteran squad with 3 grenade launcher, 1 missle launcher veteran squad with 3 grenade launcher, 1 missle launcher imperial gaurd regular squad with grenade launcher, missle launcher imperial gaurd regular squad with grenade launcher, missle launcher imperial gaurd regular squad with grenade launcher, missle launcher imperial gaurd regular squad with grenade launcher, missle launcher imperial gaurd regular squad with grenade launcher, missle launcher imperial gaurd regular squad with grenade launcher, missle launcher 3 scout sentinals with 3 missle launcher and 3 hunter killer missle (squaded) manticore with tank ace full payload and heavybolter and hunter killer missle (1)
Take all comers, right, should be able to fight both horde OR elite infantry OR armor OR flyers. (You might imagine this list cannot handle flying things, but that is an error, half the units are bs3+, half have orders to reroll everything, and the scout sentinals start with a 6 shot volley at +2 to hit. They are also able to move pregame to make sure they DO get a shot off, even if they end up at a minus from moving again in the first turn. And you have enough CP to do interlocked fields of fire on turns 1,2,3.
or this one...
Spoiler:
ok, humor aside, I would probably do the more enjoyable to play cadian list, which is a little bit of everything the gaurd does, except transports. company commander with powerfist and plasma pist. lord commisar with powerfist and relic bolt pistol (benediction of emperor) (-1cp) company commander with powersword and plasma pist. inquisitor / malleus / combimelta / -1 cp / extra psy power and -1 to be wounded relic 195 ministerium priest with poweraxe and inferno pistol 8 crusaders (do not take a slot with priest in the game) astropath astropath2 2 orgyn bodygaurds with bullygryn maul and 2+ armor save shield master of ordinance (warlord with old grudges and relic of lost cadia) 317 6 troops regular gaurd with 6 grenade launcher and 6 missle launcher. All carry a powersword on the sgt. 3 scout sentinals 3 in a squad with 3 missle launcher and 3 hunter killer missle
start 6 cp, and it, like the last, has that shiny new "3 sentinal" alpha strike in the mix.

This is a very casual necron list. Everything in there ranges from ok (overlord) to really bad (monolith). It will probably lose against most of the lists here. A necron list cant get much worse than this.

I made the following list of Necrons. Basically it's just parts of the 2K list I have planned out, but seems to fit this thread nicely.
So I made a Farsight Enclave Tau list.
To max out battle suits and mobility I chose Commanders, crisis and riptide (only one to avoid cheese and keep points for crisis which are the most representative unit of farsight lists) with classic current load outs.
Breachers for the mandatory troop choices for the battalion instead of strike team to avoid gunline effect and emphasize mobility / close range risky farsight strategy.
The strategy would be to hide breachers near objectives, deep strike the cyclic ion crisis and commander and protect the riptide with drones (maybe deepstrike 1 drone unit). The cold star do his thing.
To be more fluff the drones can be replaced by a crisis plasma team (plasma because its cheap and very farsight-like) if the sms on riptide are replaced by plasmas. Or the riptide itself could be replaced by another crisis team.
I'm hoping that we can get an Ork player or two up in here. I know how the BIG armies look, but not what a standard lil' waagh (only two 'a's) looks like.
