G'day dudes,

This is the list I'm currently working towards building & painting. It's only box dreadnoughts. I like to play pretty aggressively and get them in peoples faces' as quickly as possible - bar the lascannon chaplains and the rifleman. White Scars can advance and charge, then fall back and charge to keep triggering assault launchers. Furiosos can advance and stll fire their frag cannons. Smoke launchers can still go off after advancing and help make targeting decisions more interesting for the opponent.

At first I thought this was too many punchy dreadnoughts, but I have found that I love punchy dreadnoughts a lot more than shooty ones and they seem to pull a lot of weight.

The list really struggles against a) hordes and b) fast shooty things with lots of S8/9 weapons.

Storm bolters in tactical doctrine have proven pretty good at horde clearance, as have the frag cannons and heavy flamers as well as Fenrisian Great Axes in sweep mode - limited by their range however. Murderfang can put out ~10 attacks on the charge with the exploding 4s strat as well. Hurricane bolters work too but I usually find myself tossing up between getting a turn of shooting in with them or advancing and getting in a better position for charging.

I don't really have an answer to long range weaponry that can consistently outpace my boxes but I guess that's life - I could potentially fit a lot more lascannon/autocannon dreads in to try and plink away but they'd come at the cost of punchy dreads and still have to over come to hit modifiers etc.

Are there any box dread configurations I'm overlooking? I have thought about meltas on the Ironclads just so they could potentially get a shot off each on Turn 1, but it seems like a waste once they are in range - anything they would melta to death will be killed way deader by punching.

The librarian dreadnought has proven to be my favourite performer so far. With the wings spell he will often either make a t1 charge or be able to get himself in a good position for a t2 charge and then destroy whatever it is he comes up against. If not, the fight first strat can help him stay alive and get out of jail for another turn. I think I have given up Slay the Warlord every time I've used him but this list isn't really about winning on points - if the opponent has anything left on the table I'm generally going to lose.

The melee chaplain can either march up behind the ironclads or be Encircled and reroll charges w the extra trait. Haven't played with this configuration yet but I like the sound of it. Any thoughts dakka?

Nothing wrong here. dreads are my favorite 40K unit. i have been running lists with 6-7 since 5th edition.....who said primaris are all the craze, sure you can have guys in the new armor that are T5 with 3 wounds but i would rather have the ones who are T7 with 8 wounds that are equally good at shooting and CC

between all my dreads i have 14 and i tend to run them with my other favorite unit-techmarines especially on bikes.

That's what I call...
(•_•).
( •_•)>⌐□-□.
(⌐□_□)
...a dreadful list.

Sorry!

That looks like quite a few more dreadnoughts than any all-comers list can handle. I would personally make some of them a bit more shooty but I reckon punching things with 1 ton fists feels nicer.

Thanks mate! There are some progress pics in my thread in the P&M blogs section here on dakka. Up to 9 painted so far.

Sounds like a blast! Initially I really wanted to commit to only dreads on the ground but I could see filling out a battalion with some scouts and techmarines could be useful in games and provide a fun modelling opportunity as well. Guess we will see where this takes me first!

I'd been dreading this comment...

It's definitely not a list I'd bring to a pick up game without notice, but for playing against my mates with a heads up lets them fill out 2k points of plasma or try some more elite lists that they wouldn't usually get the chance to run. Depending on whether the ironclads or furiosos totally outshine one another after a couple of games I might drop them for more riflemen or mortises or potentially just regular dreads with a combat weapon that still offers 4 bolter shots and a HB/autocannon/las - it definitely feels better to punch things to bits rather than shoot them off the board but you're right, this list is heavily punch skewed at the moment!

The "dreadful list" part was a bad joke. I like your list, it's cool and metal AF.

edit: damn, I just realized the pun: "I'd been dreading this comment..."

Well my list was based on the lore for my chapter. they don't use terminators (1st company is all ven dreads) or ground vehicles(no tracks or wheels) aside from dreadnoughts as it is a full air assault chapter.

my current themactic list for 8th has 3 ironclads, a doredeo, backed by air support and scouts in land speeder storms (if i had the will and/or money, i would probably add some inceptors.-as much as i hate the lore they are sexy minis)

Tzurk, your dreads.. they are so cool. I'd love to play against this list with 15 of them matching to boot. Not sure how I'd fair though haha

You are going to have very swingy matchups. My tau would destroy this list, but I think my chaos marines would have a very hard time. And I'm not sure how my eldar would fair. I don't think its got enough anti-tank, I think that would be a lot of fun to play against though.

Where do you stand on Invicta warsuits they close enough to a Dreadnaught for you? If so drop a few in right in front of the enemy lines tie up the opponent while your tide of stomping badasses come along and grind them into a fine mush

It's actually surprisingly good even against tau. when 8th first dropped i tried a triple vanguard detachment (fire support/mid range mixed/dedicated close combat) 2k list with 2 techmarines on bikes with conversion beamers and 3 dreads (mostly venerables) in each detachment. 9 dreads and 6 tech bikers. it was a brutally effective list.

Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to destroy some other army is insignificant next to the power of the Tau. ;-)

Psst-

One of my armies circa 4th/5th ed

Back when tau were awesome without riptides (still have the codex, not all the minis).

Back on topic.....this is one incarnation i tried out for a test double vanguard list for 8th...because dreadnoughts

the scouts are counts as eliminator snipers and the tacticals were playing the part of hellblasters.

It was a silly list, but it was fun. .
