I've been looking for something like this lately. I've found a few out there that are either generic for the era or specific to the war, but I'm not really sure what to go with. This is something that i would like to one day try out with my nephew (who is going to be 11 soon) so Ideally less complex, but still with a good historical backing would be ideal.

Have you checked out Sharp Practice? The ruleset covers a series of periods including the one you are after. I haven't tried it out for american civil war, but its a nice set.

It's not meant for massed battles like blackpowder. You still keep your ranks, though it's more a skirmish game. It adds a lot of character though with specialized roles and such.

It has lists for civil war, american independance, french indian war, napoleonic and indian mutiny.

Longstreet is my #1

Fire and Fury/Regimental Fire and Fury, and Johnny Reb III are other popular rulesets for the period that i can recall off the top of my head.

I believe theres a Black Powder expansion for the period as well

Fire and fury is the gold standard for me. They have regimental scale and brigade scale.

The black rage is within us all. Lies offer no shield against the inevitable. You speak of donning the black of duty for the red of brotherhood; but it is the black of rage you shall wear when the darkness comes for you.

Thanks, everyone! I'm checking out Longstreet right now, since it seems to have an easily accessible free light version. It looks like it should work for a quick family game.

Another vote for Longstreet here. I'm definitely a fan of Sam Mustafa's work.

They are old school now but we have played Johnny Reb II since they came out. Never looked at another set, no need too.
