Alright, now that everyone's trying to play on TTS during lockdown, I'm finally able to get some reliable games in.
I have to play at 1K points though, because stuff in TTS takes about twice as long as IRL.

And on that note, I have been told that my faction of choice (Sylvaneth) is not only a difficult faction to get right for a newb, but on the backstep at 1K points. And I've gotten crushed every game.

I'm bad at strategy. I don't want to have to go cheese but I think it's the way I'm gonna have to do it if I actually want to get in some wins.

Any suggestions on factions that play simply but are strong at 1K points?

Sylvaneth is for sure a hard army to play and even moreso at lower levels to a point (Depends on table size and terrain) they heavily relay on their terrain, and the less they can get on the table the worst for them. They also relay on some other things they need thats hard to get in 2k.

For a 1k list that plays easy, fir melee either go Orruks, BoC, or BoK. All three can do 1k somewhat easily. Where something like Slaanesh has a harder time. Skaven and Gloomspite are both fine at 1k as well, tho Skaven is better tha Goblins, but Goblins can be more fun. Out of death LoN is stil viable at 1k, OBR are so costly you wouldn't have a lot of tools and 1 mistake will make you lose the game most likely. And finally CoS has 100's of builds at any point level.

But, what armies do you want to play? Or is there a style you like better?

Slaanesh can get two keepers in at 1k. Keepers are the problem. They don’t suffer at 1k. Now, BoK I can have a 20man Blood Warrior Squad snacking you in the face from jump, enraged by Wrathmongers and a Bloodsecrator. And they might be able to handle those KoSs. But HoS is good at any point value (except maybe 500).

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I think you're discovering one of the primary strategies already cheesing is part of the main strategy.

It will certainly help you roll lesser lists though you'll have to be prepared for good strategists also cheesing.

Keeps can't do much when its literally them and 2 a battalion, just play the objective. 1 Body vs all of yours. Yes they are very good, but its not like in 2k where you have 3 battalion (only 1 more from 1k) and 3 other heroes.

Can they work at 1k? Yes, but so can ogres, you just don't get the best value out of your units is what i'm saying and a experience player can exploit that easily. He was saying he is new, why give him a list (2 KoS) that you need to have perfect movements to work?

Two keepers where one had a thermal rider cloak, seeker trait and run/charge command ability, chronomatic cogs endless spell and two basic units. I don’t remember if cogs are 60 or 80 now; if 60, take 2 units of daemonettes for objectives or a chariot and a unit of hellstriders. If they’re 80 take hellstriders. Or Shalaxi as a hero killed so you can have two troop chariots. Run and slam. That keeper with all the buffs is hitting something like a 32” threat radius with flight. I honestly don’t consider that “difficult to use”. Picking your targets wisely is pretty standard. And not trying to be smart mouthed. I’m honestly suggesting this if you want a powerful small mode count list at 1k.

I have been told Ironjawz wrecks at 1K. Megaboss, warchanter and 40 Ardboyz. I'll take that for a spin.

I thought about doing Khorne as well. I've heard that at 2K they suffer from wholly-wothin bubble hell in order to make them work as they need to, but perhaps at lower points it is more manageable.

If you're looking for cheese or lists that play themselves, khorne at 2000 points is going to disappoint you for sure. At least right now until the next General's Handbook depending on how that shakes things up.

All the competitive khorne lists save one that I have seen revolve around how cheap bloodthirsters are. At 1000 that plus perhaps some MSU bloodreavers/marauders may be able to do well.

Consider; Games Workshop rules not so much games but as toolboxes for players to craft an experience from, and open/narrative/matched play just examples of how things can be put together.

Khorne is consider A tier. Tho it does have a lot of bad units. But having 6" combat range double move or fighting Behemoths is really good.

I'd very much like to see where these "tiers" reside. I have up to this very point heard and seen with my own eyes khorne very much not being A tier.

And the khorne lists I see being played at the local tournaments all revolve around 3 blood thirsters and summoning in more blood thirsters.

But that’s not at 1k points.
At 1k Khorne actually become surprisingly difficult to deal with.

I’d say run with OBR though if you want an army that’s straight forward and easier to play.
They are solid and pretty forgiving.

AoSshorts and Honest Wargamer has recorded over 9,000 matches from events and made a list. It was last updated before DoT/KO/OBR so it might be a little skewed right now. But for the most part the tiers are the same other than a few going down 1 degree like HoS and some like Nagash is just wrong. Looking at the pre finished new results tho Khorne is still A tier, not S like DoT for sure. ALso there is a chart on AoSshorts, don't look at that, idk why they haven't taken it down yet but its like a year old.

Something to think about, just to play them its 380pts for the requirements, so they might not be fun to play with, just something to keep in mind.

I've put some time into it and I think IJ may be the way to go. I've cooked up a list and will take it for a spin on TTS later this weekend.

I've been looking at a lot of strategies and from what I'm being told, maxing heavy infantry is the way to go. At 1k points.

I've so far had amazing luck with 1k Ogormaw :-)

...cause it's hard to kill Ogors with only 1000pts of firepower!

What do you run? Glutton hordes or a single FLOSH?

So far I've been doing a mix of gluttons and leadbelchers mostly, with a few flanking mournfangs to help engage smaller stuff. Plus the Tyrant is a steal for his points, especially if you build him right :-)

Just hope you don't run into Coalesced Seraphon; hard counter bitch-slap to Mawtribes.

In my limited area and playing I've had good success with with Ossiarch Bonereapers.

Petrifex Elite

LEADERS:

Liege-Kavalos
-Godbone Armor
-Might Archaeossian

Mortisian Boneshaper
-Empowered Nandarite Weapons

UNITS:

20 x Mortek Guard - Swords

5x Kavalos Deathriders - Spears

OTHER:
3x Stalkers
or
Harvester

ENDLESS:
Bone-Tithe Shrieker

The 20 Mortek can hold their own pretty well supported by the Boneshaper. If you have the Harvester they are even harder to move. The Deathriders are to harass and remove screens. Stalkers go out alone and harass and take down harder units.

I make bad decisions and think they are good.
