So I've been a long time gamer, ever since astroids in the 80's, but haven't played much over the last ten years. Mainly because I've better things to do (building and painting 28mm models ) but also because I'm bored quickly with recent games. I enjoyed gaming a lot back in the days and would like to find a couple of games which can keep my attention. Hence a cry out for some help and pointers.

The games which I enjoyed playing most were Fallout II, old X-coms (Enemy unknown and TFTD), old RPGs like Baldur's Gate etc. When looking at this I guess I wasn't able to transfer from (3d)-isometric to full 3d which most games are nowadays. Next to that I don't like everything tries to give you something new every couple of minutes. Let me explain: I tried Wasteland 2 as it suposedly is a bit like my favorite: Fallout 2. But it had to be bigger, fancier and new in every location. Didn't like that game and soon quite. Also not a fan of high-magic btw, more into post-apoc/western-style.

So, is there any PC isometric RPG you guys can recommend me? Something in the line of Fallout II, the old X-coms and Baldur's Gate?

Your query covers a lot of different potential games, some of which you may have already played. Though if you are avoiding fantasy games that does narrow it down quite a lot.

ATOM RPG has some good reviews. I haven't played it myself but it sounds like the kind of game you're looking for.

I had not heard of this game but it sounds just like what I was looking for. Thanks!!!!

The Shadowrun games?

Isometric RPG, guns, cyberpunk. Bit of magic and elves.

I only played the first one, but it seemed to be more story driven, as opposed to a gear and XP ladder to climb.

Edit: Hey, that ATOM game looks rather cool!

I think High West is like Western-style X-Com, but can’t confirm.

You might also really like Underrail. Seems like a spiritual successor to the older Fallout games, that appears to be surprisingly long.

Arcanum is like Diablo, but set in a steampunk setting. Not sure how high-fantasy it is.

Arcanum isn't like Diablo. Its magic vs tech, and more a derivative of Fallout and Baldur's Gate (a lot of the Black Isle team, different company)
Also buggy and can be a pain to run on modern systems.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

I'm not up on any post-apocalyptic games, but for an isometric RPG? I'd say Pillars of Eternity

Or if you want a shorter game Tyranny by the same company.

I prefer to buy from miniature manufacturers that *don't* support the overthrow of democracy.

Pillars sounds interesting, I just wishlisted it. Good tip!

Been looking some more into Atom RPG though and that discovery just made my day. If I could have custom ordered a game to be developed this would be it. Now finish some commissions and hobby projects so I can delve into it

XCom 2 is free to play right now (on XBox One and Steam) for another day or two. If you haven't checked it out yet, you might want to.

You mentioned that you liked the old X-Com games. But you didn't mention whether you had any particular dislike of the new games.

Played X-com 1 for some time and I liked it. But it is getting too much and too big now. Same for the newer fallout games. I don't want to run around in powerarmour after an hour of playing the game, let me start of with almost nothing and slowly work my way up. With X-com the aliens quickly got bigger, stranger and so does the weapons of your team.

?

Power armor in an hour? News to me. Maybe the first tier armor upgrade (not power armor) after playing for just a short bit. But you could do that in the original, too.

The progression in the reboot works more or less as it did in the original game. Your equipment gradually gets better, and your opponents gradually get tougher. The Ethereals and Sectopods don't show up until later in both games. There's a few new sets of armor with unusual abilities (the skeleton suit, for instance). But by and large the reboot game heavily shows its roots, with direct correlations between the reboot and the original in most of the game elements. The biggest change (aside from the whole tactical engine, of course) that I'd identify is probably the new class system. Oh, and I suppose you could note that plasma rifles serve a purpose in the reboot. In the original, heavy plasma guns were light enough that you could use them as the main guns for everyone who wasn't carrying a blaster launcher.

XCom 2, on the other hand, makes a lot of changes to the logistics and management side of gameplay.

Incidentally, the easiest way to identify between the original and the reboot is with the hyphen. The original hyphenated X-Com. The reboot does not.
