Hi all. Got back into 40k in September. Painted the miniature on the left. Now startint to paint some reinforcements. The blue does not match.
I am SURE I painted the originals the same way- Macragge Blue spray...Drakenhoff Nighthsade(wiped from shoulders and open areas) then detailed. Done the Righthand figure the same way and its much darker.
Any advice on how I mighta painted the left (original figure) or why its so much lighter? I even tried to Testors Dullcote the new figure just now but its still lots darker.
At bit of a loss as how to proceed.
Is it possible the Blue Spray can is a new one and slightly different shade? Does that happen to this extent?

The one on the left looks like its been heavily dry brushed with a much lighter blue judging by the texture of paint on the shin

Gotta agree. Just at a glance it looks like a middle layer of lighter blue (GW how-to?) wasn't added.

Thanks for the input folks.
I honestly do not recall a Drybrush on these.....I certainly cant 'see' Drybrush on the model in my hand.
Might be the only way to try get them he same though from here.
Can anyone put my mind at ease...different batches of Macragge Blue spray would have such a variation would they potentially(or do they?)

Could be the plastic colour. Was the one on the right from Conquest by any chance? It's possible you didn't get full opacity from the spray so if one was a blue Conquest mini it could affect the final coat.

It does look like a second layer was added over the base, could it have been Altdorf or maybe Calgar blue? Also, the highlight looks lighter on the newer mini, though that could just be the greater contrast tricking my eyes.

I don't think so, certainly not to the extent that appears in the photo. If it was just one spray of Macragge Blue, wash and highlights, then it has to be that you're spraying onto bare plastic and the plastic is a different colour on each marine. Acrylic paints are somewhat transparent so the colour underneath affects the colours above. Could you have primed the earlier one white or grey?
Failing that, did you reapply the Macragge blue after the wash phase? Or a thin layer of another colour such as Calgar Blue or something? Perhaps this technique of applying a wash and wiping it off is the problem - it doesn't sound like an exact science, and variations on how long you leave it on before wiping will cause variations in the tone.
My money is on one being a grey plastic miniature and the other being blue plastic. I guess the easiest way to fix this for future would be to prime everything grey before the Macragge Blue phase. A can of Mechanicus Standard Grey or Army Painter Standard Grey would probably do the job.

Yeah, if there were discrepancies in colour that big - people would throw a damn riot whilst trying to paint Ultramarines, etc.
I have had some minor colour shifts in another brand of coloured primers, but not to that extreme.

Hey macragge blue is a shade darker than ultramarines just add some white that's what I had to do. This is the problem the original are ultramarines blue and the later ones are macragge they are dif shades which is annoying Automatically Appended Next Post: The new macragge blue is literally purple its ridiculous had exact same problem
