I think the last time i posted on this site was in 2010 and that was the last time i played 40k but im started it again and finished my chaos space marines and played my first game since 2010 against another new player that played a eldar wraith army and lets just say i wasn't prepared for the toughness and wounds they have and how much damage the wraiths can put out, i will say my obliteraters did work, they would almost kill a squad a turn but i only ran one squad of 3,but anyway i ended up loosing pretty bad but had a ton of fun with the new rule system and cant wait to play more.
So im also working on a nid army with alot of genestealers i have 60 genestealers so far and also have 2 broodlords ,2 trygoins, 3 zoanthropes, and a swarm lord on the way
someone told me about something called a swarmlord slingshot army with genestealers and it sounded pretty awesome so i guess im going for that since i already had all the genestealers. Now on to my questions for my nids if im going to be doing the sling shot army i want it to be my competitive army and my chaos to be for fun army but since ive never been the one to be competitive i dont know what else to get like i dont even know if i should use my trygons or zoanthropes, i want to build a 2000 point competitive nid list and so far with my swarmlord and one brood lord and 60 genestealers im only at around 1000 points, what else do i need to get to 2000 points and also to make it competitive.
60 genestealers is more than enough. The standard is two units of 20. But it's not a terrible idea to have a 3rd unit for redundancy.
They're powerful but fragile, and rely on using the quirks of the fight phase to your advantage to keep them alive. Namely, taking hostages at every opportunity. Also using some of the tyranid stratagems like Overrun to either run away behind cover, or to push through a screen into vulnerable targets, as the situation dictates.
There's lot of ways you can extend the list after this, but usually I'd recommend pairing up the genestealer slingshot with some good shooting units. So that while the genestealers are suppressing parts of the enemy army, you can gun down others.
Hive Guard and Exocrines are currently the top choices for tyranid shooting.
Typically I run 1 unit of 6 hive guard, and 2 exocrines. Put them in a Kronos detachment, so they can re-roll 1's to hit if they don't move. Use one of your Zoanthropes as a Neurothrope, which is a decent HQ choice, and can supply the Symbiostorm psychic power to them.
With that gun battery kronos detachment + a kraken detachment containing 40 genestealers, swarmlord, and broodlord, you're at about 1500 points. From there you've got room to play around. You need an extra troop choice for the kraken detachment to make it a battalion, and 3 troops + another HQ to make the kronos detachment into a battalion.
I'd usually fill those out with cheap troops like rippers, and screening units like termagants. Fourth HQ for me is often a Malanthrope, for a bit of extra defense on the exocrines.
You should still have some spare points left over at this point. So maybe try that third unit of genestealers.
Note that this is keeping it pure tyranids. Competitively speaking, you often see tyranids taking genestealer cult allies. It's not required, but worth thinking about.
I agree that 60 Genestealers is more than enough. Genestealers are fragile for their points, it’s preferable for your enemy to be shooting at screening troops, like Hormogaunts or Gargoyles. Then let the Genestealers charge in and do the real close combat damage.
