So, this list stems from the fact that dark reaper exarchs can take a sniper trait with their tempest launchers, albeit at 18". With doom and jinx they can almost take out a chapter master on their own so webway strike is necessary but I've got lots of cp.
So I started thinking about other options, I'm not a big fan of rangers but they make sense in this list. The sniper warlord trait plus a wraithseer who can pop out with a star cannon before firing and fading back out of sight is just great trolling. Illic isn't bad and is cheap. The autachs aren't snipers as such but only need a tiny gap to drop in and say hello with their fusion pistols. Apart from that it's a fairly standard expert crafters and masterful shots list.
What do you think, is this a gimmick list that could work?

Well, I like the idea which is quite reasonable in a character-heavy setting. I recognised that GSC often fields a bunch of characters.
The downside is that the army is rather static and a fast moving army could silence your guns in round 2.

I admit I probably wouldn't go to this extreme in a competitive environment but there's definitely some good parts in the list.
I was thinking more about chapter masters, though gsc are another good example, take away chapter masters and marines become a lot less scary.

Here's a more balanced list, between the reapers, illic and the wraithseer there's enough to keep most characters worried.

I've one shot main characters on a couple occasions using Mind War. Combine with a Hemlock with Horrify and a Shadowseer Harlequin model from Silent Shroud using Shards of Light (-5 LD).

That combo is for max effectiveness, but it is still quite effective when parts only work. Getting the Hemloock in place and casting Shards of Light are generally quite easy to pull off and produces a -3 LD.

I have not utilized the Dark Reapers for sniping duty, but definitely see utility with 3 x 3 squads and set up for a turn two character(s) elimination. Webway Strike would allow for relative freedom to get within the sniping range while still retain utility with the other two models in each unit. Reapers are still a very good unit to include in nearly any build.

I've tried the Wraithseer before, but it was before Expert Crafters and Masterful Shots. May be worth a second look now.

There's definitely worth in mind war, hemlock aura plus embolden is a four point swing that's not hard to pull off at all, plus the other stuff, soup especially can make it crazy.

With strictly Craftworld, getting -3 LD is fairly easy, but my not outright kill a character. The Wraithseer or Illic may be a nice supplemental shooter.

Did you ever try any of these lists? I'm curious how the Reapers worked out.

I find illic countered very easily with LOS and on his own he does not kill enough.

However in a similiar vein - I have a mad idea for a list that includes 3x10 2x5 and (thats right.. 40) Alitoic rangers which is designed to delete characters and alpha big targets.

The concept is to doom target characters and guide a unit of rangers that appears out of DS/moves. Move one blob of 10 up the board and advance T1.

Have the characters: AOK mark of hunter, fasreers/Eldrad/ jainzar/autarch and illic. Also include the triumverate of ynnead/wraithseers

Cast conceal on one big blob while using the alitoic strat on the other which makes them targetable on 6's. while giving the other one -3 over 12" or plain -3 with LFr Ensure the big blobs are within 12" of the AOK.

Not sure if these ramblings make any sense but i think it would be a very fun list to play as essentialy you would have mainly characters and any screens you had would be either untargetable or targetable on 6's.. I haven't put any concrete things on battle scribe yet but once I do i will share it.

I haven't had a chance, I'm only getting a few games in on TTS a week and wanted to keep focused on my actual list for a change!

I'd be interested to see it, I haven't played with rangers much but found them a bit underwhelming when I have, hopefully you can shine a light for me.

Still working on it

Ive been using Ulthwe rangers as a CP battery and unlocking eldrad. I only used squads of 5 and I think they arent great offensively due to reliance on terrain for survivability. But as backfield screeners they are excellent. Pop them in terrein and they are -1 to hit, 3+ and a 6++ troops with a 36" range. They work well enough with snipy Reaper launcher autarch to plink off the extra wound or two.

I think they shine as alitoic though.

Yeah, I do think the sniping reapers have real potential, they just don't fit in my current list. If anyone has the chance to try them I'd love to hear feedback.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Plus, even if they aren't in range themselves they can be a big deterrent to enemy characters from wanting to get within 24" of any of those exarchs. Or could even be almost distraction carnifex type models that force your opponent into making mistakes because they become fixated on your aeldari eliminators!

Once Scotland reaches the next stage of lockdown I'll be able to play my (first) game of 40k with a fellow new player. His ultra marines list consists of a castle including:

Librarian TIg,(-1 to hit one unit)
Chapter Master with hits reroll bubble
Lieutenant with wounds of 1 reroll bubble
Chief apothecary 6+fnp bubble
6 aggressors
3 assault centurions
2 dreads
msu intercessors

I've swapped DR exarch powers to go anti character and am considering going back to my 3 x 5 ranger second battalion so will definitely have some feedback on whether I can put a dent in them. I'm not sure I want to charge my big blob of Spears into that lot especially considering for 1 cp he can fall back with the aggressors, shoot 100+ times and charge me in one turn, so my spearhead may need some reexamination. 3 x 3 DRS with the exarch sniper power should do the trick.

Yikes, doesn't your friend like you?
That's a pretty brutal list! I'd definitely keep your sniping reapers far back and let him come to you. You really need to deal with the aggressors and centurions before I'd push forward with the reapers otherwise you'll only have smoking boots where your reapers used to be!

The good news is that reapers are very good at killing aggressors and centurions, you will need quite a few though for that many, though things like falcons and fire prisms are also great for taking them out too.
