If they want to dabble in what might be a bigger hobby, here what I'd recommend for low investment, high impact stuff that can order online or find with a single local stop.
The easiest way I've seen to do climbing vines is a wandering line of PVA glue (Elmer's) and a sprinkling of colored flock, synthetic foliage, or even dried herbs from the kitchen. For moss and lichen I'd sponge on a few different gray-green acrylic paints with a natural or kitchen sponge. For general weathering, add more acrylic paint to the purchase, maybe a burnt umber and an unbleached titanium (off-white), and a couple of cheap 1" brushes. Drybrush light surfaces with darker paint and dark with light.
Next level: sand and prime the whole structure white, hand paint in neutral acrylics, weather as above, and add vegetation. Whatever level of detail they go with, clearcoat the whole thing at the end, especially if it's going it's going to get played with.
Sounds fun!
