Hi everyone,
First post Im an old guy from Tyne and Wear England who has been introduced to the worlds 2nd most expensive hobby by a good friend and work colleague, However it's so addictable it should be illegal.

Im really really new to 40k warhammer, I haven't got any figures yet but I have ordered No know fear box set to get me going, additionally I have ordered Blood Angels contrast paints to get me started and to practice my painting skills.
No Codex yet, my mind is spinning with what fraction is best and have decided on Blood angels as I like the colour red.

Tbh I'm doing this more for my mental health, and a chance to do something where I can get lost in painting and playing (I'm not great with painting but hopefully practice makes it better)

Im also a bit daunted by playing my first match what with being older and a total newbie to it all, still not even 50% with the rules.

All I'm asking is be patient with me, I will ask questions and some might seem trivial, but I'm here to learn and have some fun.

Welcome to the hobby. Totally normal to be completely addicted and hobby ADHD is a real thing. I've probably collected 10 different armies of various sizes just because I enjoyed their color, look, or feel.

I do the same thing. I don't really play anymore and more focus on the building and painting aspect of the hobby. Usually I put on a YouTube video or listen to an audio book and just paint. If you have any questions about anything don't be afraid to ask. You'll probably be overwhelmed with the amount of help people put on here.

Yeah this place is great. I'm just getting into it myself, and theres such a disgusting amount of cool stuff in this hobby you'll always something to learn/read/do. It took me literally a week to make a final decision just of what faction I wanted to make first. It's a deep hole but worth every second.

Cheers GenChicken.
What are the reasons for your chosen faction?
Tbh I'm a bit in awe at the depth of the universe, never mind who can do what at a particular time.
I dare say I might even change fraction(or not) when I find out more info, reluctant to having to buy codex for every faction mind
Can I ask what is a reasonable army size for a game?

I'm doing the Thousand Sons. If you're not familiar with them they're basically Egyptian themed Chaos Marines who got roped into it by their Primarchs bad decision. I picked them because the aesthetic and they have absolutely dummy amounts of spells. As for finding info just look at the GW website at the models and just browse, if you find one that looks cool, the internet is your friend.

Sadly I cant really help you with army size because it's so subjective, and it changes from place to place, game type to game type. The general idea is points, most game types have points limits and every model has a point number. The biggest thing I can tell you is buy the big book. It has EVERYTHING you need to know to start the building process. And when you find what army you want, the Codex is the single most important thing you need. Even if you decide to do something else, they're mostly lore books so you'll at least have great reading.

Hi SnakeDoctor!

Colour scheme for Marines isn’t a “locked door”. You can paint them like Blood Angels (I did) and then play them as whichever flavour you like.

Marines in a loose and general term are the middle ground of most factions. Sometimes that means playing to an opponent’s weakness, and that will take some time to get used to.

Welcome to the hobby! If you’re open about being new, most people are happy to support and teach.

Hello and welcome.

If you specifically want to play Blood Angels, then they have their own dedicated codex. They have slightly different rules and available units than the normal space marines.

If you just want red marines, there's lots of existing chapters that you could choose, or could just make up your own - this would use the regular Space Marines codex.

Welcome Snakedoctor! I agree, this is a dangerously expensive hobby, marginally less so than crack cocaine but it's a close call!

As an alternative to regular 40k rules which can be a bit intimidating, try Grimdark Future from onepagerules.com, they're free and a lot less scary looking ;-)

What is exalt 1 button do? Figured its like type of thing but didn't want to press it in case I was in trouble.
GenChicken, 1000 sons looks so flamboyant look amazing, the big book is the codex yeah?

greatbigtree. Never knew you could change colours of chapters, need some discipline under my belt before I start freelancing.

Crispy78. Cheers, do I need the ultra marine and a blood angels codex if I played blood angels?

Skinflint Games, Too right it's dear should have taken up buying 1st issues of Marvel comics, never heard of Grimdark future but I will give it a look.

Many thanks again everyone.

Yeah, since they started releasing “chapter tactics” that are rules related to subfaction / colour of your models, the *general* consensus is that so long as it is consistent, you can paint your dudes whichever colour you want and use the rules that you like.

BA and “Standard” Marines are different codices. Right now... standard marines are the “better” option. There are a couple of BA specific models, like Death Company and Sanguinary Guard... so unless you’re in love with those models, I’d suggest starting out with the Vanilla Codex.

Also! You might want to check your local area for interest in Kill Team. It’s similar to 40k, except you only need about 10 models for most teams, so you can get your feet wet before diving into a full army. I personally enjoy KT as a better game than 40k, so there’s a double bonus of getting some small learning games in, getting a feel for your dudes, and having a better game to play.

Rules wise, Kill Team has both rules and “Codex” for all Armies in a single book. Most people like using the “elites” add-on which opens up some more model options... but that could easily wait. If you haven’t bought rules yet, I’d suggest looking into it.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

The codex is mega important to your faction specifically. but theres a huge book that gives background on everything in lore and explains just about everything with building and game types. It's great to have

Extremely talented painters and one of the things I enjoy is they don't just use one type of paint and they show many different techniques. A piece of advice I was given by a friend was to try a new technique on every new miniature. This can be as simple as dry brushing if you've never done that. Sorry for the late reply I've been super busy at work.
