Lots of tanks and troops, pure and simple.

Catachan Emporer's Fist Tank Co Spearhead Detachment

HQ
Tank Commander - Hammer of Sunderance, Tank Ace Weapons Expert, Lascannon, Heavy Stubber

Tank Commander - Battlecannon, Lascannon, Heavy Stubber

Heavy Support
3x Leman Russ Demolishers
3x Leman Russ Demolishers
3x Leman Russ Battle Tanks w/ Heavy Stubbers

Catachan Battalion Detachment

HQ
Tank Commander - Battlecannon, Lascannon, Heavy Stubber

Company Commander - Warlord

Troops
5x Infantry Squads

So the infantry are there to screen the tanks, deny deepstrike behind, block movement, speedbump/tarpit/wrap, and otherwise demand to be dealt with. I went with a spearhead to make all but two models in my whole army OpSec via Defenders of Humanity, so tanks can grab objectives, and infantry can do the dying. It's lean on CP, but nothing in the list is heavily CP-dependent. Its very heavy on redundancy, so that late-game survivors are just as capable. Its 12 Leman Russes, that's a lot of T8 3+ wounds to deal with, on top of that there's 50 guardsmen running around. The idea is to deploy so that tank commanders are on flanks and Hammer is in the middle, demos left and right of center, and remaining russes start centered and spread left and/or right if and as needed. (this is partly due to the vehicle squadron deployment restriction caused by the datasheet limit) the range of the battlecannons means that not much is out of sight/range once i move to midfield(which is the plan).. two turns of infantry-paced movement puts me right at midfield, firing twice with grinding advance, all the while. demos have a short range, but park em at midfield, and board edge to board edge is now in range. so basically focus fire their big nasties and anti-big-nasties early with what CP i have, and move to mid field (relatively) unopposed, where i control more objectives. I chose Catachan so that the turret weapons will stay on the better side of the rate-of-fire question, without relying on tank orders or CP. Catachan also has better buffs for the infantry since they will be moving and contacting the enemy a lot. It has lots of firepower to deal with enemy heavies, and i think decent enough anti-infantry with 9 heavy bolters, 6 heavy stubbers, and 50ish flashlights.

So i realize there are a lot of things that 'aren't' in the list, and i like that, i think it will be enjoyable to play because it is so simple/redundant/versatile.

I look forward to hearing your feedback on what the list is going to have trouble with, and what i can do to mitigate the impact of those weaknesses!! : )

I'm worried that this list comes off as me being 'that guy' and 'min-maxing'. It's important to me that people at my FLGS would want to play me, and I don't want to be 'that guy'.

I just like tanks and troops, and i dont like the other units, as much. If you think the list needs adjusting so that i have less tanks and more troops to make it "fair", how many tanks is too many? Where do you draw the line?

Thanks in advance! : )

In one sense you are that guy.
Your army is hard to kill with a traditional balanced and fluffy take all comers list such as many people bring to non competitive games in local game stores. They usually have a couple good antitank assets, and you will ERASE those with massed battlecannon and demolisher fire, leaving them unable then to really affect your tanks outside of charging them in melee.

That will feel like "that guy" to a lot of them. It feels like "that guy" when you don't matter in the game, only the opponent's list build being unbalanced in a way that makes your playing unwinable matters. That's .. well, that's a possibiity here.

I don't know what the new edition will really mean yet, so its also possible that changes to the core rules will favor tanks, or disfavor them, in a manner that makes this comment obselete. Apparently, 9th is dropping now, and will be accepted long before our politicians admit the lockdown has served its purpose and is no longer necessary in most of the places it is in play.

So yeah, maybe you get to use this army and you get crushed by tac marines, who the heck knows what they are going to change?

Wow 9th is dropping?! that's awesome!

So regardless of the changes that im sure will alter things a bit, I still want to just play tanks and troops, but I want it to be fair and enjoyable. I certainly dont want to intentionally put myself at a disadvantage on purpose. But the most important thing isnt winning, its having fun. With that in mind, Im going back to the drawing board to see if i can find the right balance.

Thanks for the perspective Duke.

Im thinking more expensive tanks, or more dakka on each and that will help drop the numbers to a level that is more comfortable to play against?

I'm thinking about a list idea just like this one also. I'm thinking allot going one tank/one troop. So if I have ten tanks then I want to have ten troops.

Yea! that's how this list idea started actually, basically each tank is a mini-knight that has its own basic guard squad as a screen, and they can all sort of act independently, and mutually support each other when it makes sense to.

Here's my version of the '10 for 10' list:

10/10 list
Catachan Emporer's Fist Tank Co Spearhead Detachment

HQ
Tank Commander - Hammer of Sunderance, Tank Ace Weapons Expert, Lascannon, Heavy Stubber

Tank Commander - Battlecannon, Lascannon, Heavy Stubber

Heavy Support
3x Leman Russ Battle Tanks
2x Leman Russ Battle Tanks w/ Heavy Stubbers
2x Leman Russ Battle Tanks w/ Heavy Stubbers

Catachan Battalion Detachment

HQ
Tank Commander - Battlecannon, Lascannon, Heavy Stubber

Company Commander - Warlord

Troops
4x Infantry Squads

Catachan Battalion Detachment

HQ
Company Commander

Company Commander

Troops
6x Infantry Squads

you could also go '9 for 9' or '8 for 8', where the lower the number, the higher the quality(price) of tanks

How about REAL castle tanks?

Doomhammer
Doomhammer
Doomhammer
(I may be confusing the banehammer price with the doomhammer, in which case, I meant to type banehammer three times all along)

Each one carries its gaurd inside that being
10 gaurdsmen
10 crusaders (yep 3++ shielded t3)
1 ministerium priest
1 company commander
1 astropath
1 engenseer
Now on the surface that appears like too many elites, but its only 9 of them cause the crusaders come free in the detachment with a minipriest. You do need to make your third detachment one which brings in the last 3 elites, so I recommend 2 psyker primaris to lead the 3 astropaths as the wizards ( to accompany your fighting clerical priests) in charge of the garrison of each rolling fort. You can spread the buffs out across the castles -- which pull up on an objective, drop crusaders, and begin firing away. In melee, the doomhammer IS actually the greatest single unit the gaurd owns, and yours can be buffed with spells and repaired in place, while firing to support each other.

52 points remain as chump change, which is enough to give the gaurdsmen 3 grenade launchers, 3 lascannons, to help defend the ramparts of their tanks, and to (index option for the win) upgrade each ministerium priest to a power sword. Cause you know, clerics gotta smash.

1 point remains to give the warlord commander a bolter for ease of picking him out.

I consider this army "fluffy and fun" but its probably not competitive in the modern game, even at fluff level, there is just too much powercreep in other factions.

Ha ha ha nice list Duke, I like the triple doomhammer castle. It would be really fun to play in an attack/defend scenario like d-day where they have to blow up your 'big guns'. it would be really cool on a custom table too where there's three big hull down dugouts for the tanks to take cover in.

i definitely want my list to be able to capture more than 3 objectives, though, as ill be giving up lots of 'kill points' to my opponent (handing out guard squads like candy haha) in return for board control points. arent there a lot of scenarios with more than 3 objectives?

Based on the vid on the GW site about '9 things new in 9th', sounds like tanks will be even better, being able to shoot while in base to base, and explosives being better at anti-horde!! yeeeuh boyeeee! im gonna sell my AK47 so i can afford to buy and make the 10/10 list haha

well, you should also note that the 3 castle army can cover a lot more than just three objectives -- you have a number of officers you can drop off on the way forward who can campsit on rear ones, and not be shot there because the tanks are closer to the enemy (so character protected.)
But yeah, its not the most serious army I ever dreamed of.
