hello, i'm planning ahead for 9th edition, and came up with this list;

Astra militarum cadian supreme command
-hq- tank commander (executioner, heavy bolter, 2x plasma cannon) 185 [warlord: no trait, relic: kurov's aquila]
-hq- tank commander (executioner, heavy bolter) 165 [tank ace: steel commander]
-hq- tank commander (executioner, heavy bolter) 165 [tank ace: steel commander]
-low- shadowsword (volcano cannon, twin heavy bolter) 424

Astra militarum cadian spearhead
-hq- Knight commander pask (battle cannon, heavy bolter) 207
-hs- leman russ squadron (2, 2x eradicator, 2x heavy bolter) 260
-hs- leman russ squadron (2, demolisher, punisher, 4x heavy bolter) 296
-hs- leman russ squadron (2, demolisher, punisher, 4x heavy bolter) 296

Total 1998pts/ 5cp (-1 for tank ace)

So, any thoughs are appreciated. This might not be very competitive, because of no screens, but very intresting to see how the new edition turns out. All models have T8, 3+, and that's a lot of wounds. The commanders can issue order for every tank (except punisher) to 'pound them to dust'. The command points are reserved for 'inspired tactics'.

Looks pretty nasty, if I was running it I'd give Pask the Punisher, but each to their own. It may also be worth either going for Catachan or a unique regiment with Gunnery Training, those re-rolls will really help. You'd lose Pask but free up some points elsewhere.

Yeah, I agree that the catachan or tallarn could perform better, but i'm going with cadian. The cadian order 'pound them to dust' gives reroll for number of shots, which is basicly same as gunnery experts. Plus, the cadian trait also gives reroll ones in shooting (if stationary), which comes in handy with plasma.

I think the missions could be your biggest challenge. I like a lot of tanks, but if missions require units to not shoot or be infanty and not shoot to score points, you could face a real challenge. We know soon enough.

It still retains the the same spirit, but it adds a few more bodies to cap objectives when your Russ can't. I too was thinking a shadow sword but I feel the Valk + hell hounds will be a decent buffer between our tanks the enemy army. Astropth + Enseer stay back to deny/cast powers and heal tanks respectively. Custom regiment to get more survivability with jury-rig and re-rolls without wasting an order with gunnery. I haven't played in a while but want to get back into it for 9th so this is all theory crafting, if there's anything I stated that wrong please let me know. I like your list alvot as is though, hopefully guard tanks wont go up too much in chapter approved and likewise I hope our LOW go down to reflect the added cost of paying cp to take them.

Games Workshop: Ruining Chaos Space Marines since 2007

First they raised prices on the Eldar, and I did not speak out because I did not play Eldar.

Then, they raised prices on the Orks, and I did not speak out because I did not play Orks.

Then, they raised prices on the Nids, and I did not speak out because I did not play Nids.

Then, they raised prices on the Marines, and there was nobody to speak out for me.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I think that your list could be optimized for a brigade, with some fine tuning. My list include shadowsword, just to deliver alpha strike against knights, and comparison to your list, seems that you dont have much long-range firepower to deal with castellan etc. And if that castellan is still on table after your turn, you'll be losing atleast one Russ per turn. I would not bother with tech-priest though, as you already have jury rigged repairs, which is a solid option.

We can bring 3 infantry/troop in spearheads in ninth? Or is this basically just become a batalion (mabe squad up 6 LR to 3 squads).

An alternative to the techpriest engenseer is to use jury rig and buy TWO more of the dirt cheap astropaths, giving oyu -1 to be hit on a tank (or valkyrie) and +1 save on the same tank (or another tank, possibly one using cover very carefully to bring its saves down to 1+ effective).

You might not fix as many wounds, but you might manage to take a few less -- and have 3, not 1, defense denials handy.

Now a bit of other thoughts.

What if you drop one tank and slap plasma sponsoons on the rest of them? With your "1 reroll per weapon" you would be very likely getting 2.25 shots per mount, x2 or 4.5 shots per tank per turn, even if you don't overcharge them cause you are on the move, that's an impressive lot of -3 AP anti-infantry (something like 23 total shot per round. Overheat it, and its a real threat to a lot of stuff, even if you end up taking a few stray hits from 1's, your fleetwide jury rigging can move to repair them, with the engenseer stepping in to fix particularly unlucky tanks or the tanks the enemy is working on killing that turn.

With the remaining 35 points, put tread gaurds on the hellhounds (I think that's 15 total) and upgrade each heavy bolter to a heavy flamer (18?) .. so 2 points remain, but your front front hellhounds are impossibly hard to cripple so they can't move full move, and as long as they are even barely in range with those dual flamers, they will just be rolling dice to see how many hits. d6 hits beats the pants off 3 misses, and the psychological impact (and thus, the amount of enemy fire diverted to stopping them) goes up with more flamers getting closer.

Well, that's my thought, though honestly I am not sure what ninth will bring and not optimistic about it from what I have heard.
