I was reading some old forums and someone claimed that Chaos Daemons had rules for the 40k table top before they did in Fantasy. Now, this claim wasn't supported, but it got me interested. I began searching and found the two Realms of Chaos books (Slaves to Darkness and The Lost and the Damned). Reading through it has rules for both 40k (1st Edition) and Warhammer Fantasy Battle (3rd Edition). Trying to research if rules for Chaos Daemons existed in WhFB prior to this got me no where, so I decided that someone on Dakka might know definitively and be able to provide evidence.

Did rules for Chaos Daemons exist for either 40k or WhFB prior to the Realms of Chaos books? If so, what publications did they appear in?

As far as I am aware the Realms Of Chaos books were their first appearance

I believe they're in the Armies book for 3rd edition. Wich came out well before the two chaos volumes

Thanks for the information. Looking at the WhFB 3rd edition army book, Chaos Daemons don't exist as a faction. There is the Chaos faction as a whole, such as Beastmen and Chaos Warriors, but no daemons. Looking closely though, some of the Wizzards had spells to summon daemons and referenced the core rulebook.

Reading the rulebook shed some interesting details. While it appears Chaos Daemons weren't a faction until Realms of Chaos, there were spells to summon both lesser and greater daemons, as well as steeds. They appear to be basic statlines with a few rules, but nothing like Realms of Chaos that defined the four gods and units there in.
