Hi all

I’m looking for some advice as to whether I can construct a vaguely competitive list from what I have already built and painted.

Context is that I’ve been slowly building and painting for a while, and really enjoying that. Because I have a demanding job and kids, my time to build and paint a list is limited and what I have (listed below) represents 18 months’ worth of building and painting.

I would like to take the plunge into regular matched play games. I’m a reasonably competitive dude. By that, I mean I don’t mind losing – but do not like being absolutely annihilated or wiping the floor all the time. So, what I was looking for is some advice as to whether you think I could construct a vaguely competitive list out of the what I have built and painted to table-top standard, listed below.

I know much will depend on the ‘local meta’ at any of the three FLGS in my area, and yes, 9th edition is around the corner…. but I’d still love to hear your views on whether I could field a vaguely competitive list of say, 1500 or 2000 points with the units below. If so, which ones do you recommend I take? For what it is worth, I was planning on running a Raven Guard successor chapter, or running straight Raven Guard. I also love the idea of drop-pods slamming down and disgorging grav-devastators.

So, hit me up: can I even hope to compete with a list built from the units below? If so, which ones? Thanks in advance!

You are right on with ravengaurd or a successor (extra 3 inch range gives aggy flamers a real boost on turn 1.)

You might want also to buy a few tiny things to tweak the list for competitiveness, like some eliminators, 3 more aggresors (ravengaurd's master of ambush + chaplain should let you get a first turn charge with them, and last I heard, six aggressors are even better than 3.).

Your heavy elite plasma units are very expensive for stuff that is very likely to self destruct when you fire it against many, many enemies who have lots of -1 to -2 to be hit units.

Your armor is going to struggle competitively. Its not tough enough to hang with so few wounds to soak incoming fire, so it will basically be every player you meet blowing up your predator and your razorback on turn 1. I know that would be my move, because every competivie list has some dedicated "answers for big stuff like knights and heavy long range tanks" and it will all get focused on those 2 units. If you put something increidbly dangerous in the rhino, it might just get the rhino blown up first and the razorback, same, but then your good unit like devs or such, is stuck near the smoking hole of their former ride. Drop pod dev squads are a thing in competiive play last I heard. So that's all good you are on the right track.

A single apothecary works well in ravengaurd style lists.
Paired with an ancient banner guy, your elite plasma troops can shoot back half the time when the enemy kills them, potentially really screwing up some enemy lists (like my list, I drop a buttload of scion plasma squads. But if each time I fire one I kill four hellblasters, that means I end up eating 2 shots each from 2 of those hellblasters in return, enough to wipe out a lot of my plasma unfired. Seriously, sucks to be me then, and means I would have to figure out how to kill the ancient banner with a gaurd list (not so easy!) Your infilitrators force any deepstriker to start outside 12 inches, + your -1 to be hit therefore kicks in, AND you shoot back when you are hit? That's nasty even before the apothecary calmly brings them hellblasters back from the dead to fire again.
A single inquisitor can really pump up your psychic shenanigans and even be used to deny overwatch up front. There is one guy for 130 who can deepstrike and cast like 4 times and deny 3.

Finally, ravengaurd has ways other than a rhino to get stuff up front safely.

So I would lean towards a marine infantry and character list with maybe the one drop pod, a few deepstrikes, and turn 0 deployment stuff like infiltrators/scouts, as being your best bet.

(I play gaurd. Actual marine players may have different advice, but my main opponent is a ravengaurd fanatic recently, and I have lost to many, many such lists.)

    Guard gaurd gAAAARDity Gaurd gaurd.
