With indomitus and the 9th edition on the horizon I was planning on finally starting that Black Templars army that I've always wanted to make but didn't because primaris wasn't really that melee focused (I really like primaris). I also started thinking about making my own chapter as a side project for fun, but now that I feel like I have a pretty nice idea for a successor chapter with Hungry for Battle and Whirlwind of Rage in mind I kind of want to focus more on that one. I'm still doubting however because I'm not sure whether I'll be better off playing my own chapter or Black Templars.

What do you guys think? Should I go with Black Templars with charge roll re-rolls and 5+++ FnP or a successor chapter with +1 to advance and charge rolls and an extra hit on 6's on the charge?

Would appreciate you guys' input! Thanks in advance!

Vigo. Spain.

A white scar or ravenguard sucessors with Hungry for Battle and Whirlwind of Rage would be a better meele chapter than Black Templars, sadly, yes. Probably White Scar would be the most meele based.

If you like the black templar aesthetic nothing is pushing you out of using more kingly bodies, heads and bits and having a mostly black paint scheme.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

Paint your dudes as Black Templars (if you like the aesthetic) and try out both sets of rules, find which one works out better for you.

Fundamentally though, with the nerfs to melee (and yes, 9th has made melee worse, between fighting in ranks being hobbled and tanks like the Punisher being able to fire at close to full efffect in melee), any melee army is going to not really be viable.

Thanks for you guys' replies! I do like the Black Templars aesthetic but somehow I had it in my head that my own chapter needed its own color scheme. It is indeed a much better idea to paint them as black templars and play them as whatever I want! XD Also a little sad to realise that melee armies will still not be viable but what the hell, they'll still be cool!

The ruins of the Palace of Thorns

I painted guys in my blog as Executioners, but I use Black Templar rules for them, mainly for access to Crusader squads.

I play at a games club which has zero problem with that sort of thing, luckily.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Posting as Fifty_Painting on Instagram.
