So, it's a model in a unit with 5 models or less have to be within 2'' H - 5'' V of one other model in the unit and if the unit had 6 or more models each would have to be within range of two other models.

But is there anything stopping you from splitting a unit into two mini units? Like say leave a small cluster of 3 models (so they are in range of each other for coherency) in your deployment zone keeping a character company and reaping buffs from that character out of all denial range, and the rest of the unit 7-12 models of whatever push forward doing all the work but still getting the buffs from the part hanging way back.

Is that possible? Sure it has a slight frailty to coherency when you start pulling models, but nothing that isn't somewhat manageable. By the time the unit is at the point you can't have 3 models in each mini unit, you don't have to be as strict with coherency.

“As a single group”. It’s in the first sentence of the Unit Coherency rules.

No he meant like the start-of-8th “well it doesn’t say they have to be one group” shenanigans. Luckily, new core rule prohibits that in the first sentence.

From 'Unit Coherency Checks':

Each player must now remove models, one at a time, from any of the units in their armies that are no longer in unit coherency, as defined on page 4, until only a single group of models from the unit remains in play and in unit coherency
