The clash of old school (very old school now) chaos warband was part of their charm. One screaming madman leading whatever force he could gather, be that the remnants or his legion or the remnants of many.
I do think that having the marks cancel each other out so much is annoying, though this is somewhat mitigated for
CSM by the legion abilities. Daemons are regimented as hell, with the slightest deviation in mark canceling out many of their abilities. As to Marine/daemon detachments, while mono-faction detachments should get some extra perks, having detachments full of different broadly aligned units should be allowed. For example, it's not like bloodletters and berzerkers really have any difference in fighting styles or allegiance.

I also think that they have put too great an emphasis on the 30k legions in 40k Chaos lately, probably due to the popularity of the Heresy at the end of 7th.
I think a renewed focus on non-cult heretic astartes and the tide of traitors, mutants and heretics that form the bulk of Chaos forces would be nice.
There does need to be more emphasis on the independent warbands. I do like what was done in Vigilus, but the rules felt so limited and some were downright bad, like some for the Crimson Slaughter. And yes, there needs to be more lost and damned units like Traitor Guard, beastmen, and Dark Mechanicus.
