I've been thinking: Since people seem to be taking Chaos Daemons mostly in multi-detachment armies together with CSM, and seeing how pure Daemon armies are rather "meh" both lore and gameplay-wise, wouldn't it make sense for 40k to adapt the Age of Sigmar approach when it comes to god-specific Chaos Factions?

Like having a Codex "Maggotkin of Nurgle" with Death Guard and Nurgle Daemons, a Codex "Hedonites" with Emperor's Children and Slaaneshi Daemons and so forth.

It seems more thematically sound to me than pure Daemon armies and would give Daemon units a more clearly-defined role.

I'd rather just give Chaos Daemons a special rule refunding an <ALLEGIANCE> DAEMON detachment's CP cost if your warlord is a matching <MARK OF CHAOS> HERETIC ASTARTES. Would keep things simple, reflect the fact that Chaos Marines are using the daemons as tools rather than the Daemons being any sort of organised force, and not penalise the faction that was designed to work as multiple detachments, while Space Marines who got the re-design to all work as a single big detachment.

I've always felt it was a bit of a shame that chaos in general have trended towards regimented mono-god armies with synergies and matching colours. It's just so ordered.

The clash of old school (very old school now) chaos warband was part of their charm. One screaming madman leading whatever force he could gather, be that the remnants or his legion or the remnants of many.

Yea I'm totally with you they could definetly split up the books better.

I also think that they have put too great an emphasis on the 30k legions in 40k Chaos lately, probably due to the popularity of the Heresy at the end of 7th.
I think a renewed focus on non-cult heretic astartes and the tide of traitors, mutants and heretics that form the bulk of Chaos forces would be nice.

I do think that having the marks cancel each other out so much is annoying, though this is somewhat mitigated for CSM by the legion abilities. Daemons are regimented as hell, with the slightest deviation in mark canceling out many of their abilities. As to Marine/daemon detachments, while mono-faction detachments should get some extra perks, having detachments full of different broadly aligned units should be allowed. For example, it's not like bloodletters and berzerkers really have any difference in fighting styles or allegiance.

There does need to be more emphasis on the independent warbands. I do like what was done in Vigilus, but the rules felt so limited and some were downright bad, like some for the Crimson Slaughter. And yes, there needs to be more lost and damned units like Traitor Guard, beastmen, and Dark Mechanicus.

Yeah, I play DG, Nurgle Daemons and Nurgle CSM. I'd like to have one Codex focused on these instead(put Nurgle Knights and Traitor Guardsmen right in there, too, saves you to make a new faction that ends up with a limited roster like Harlequins) of having to buy 3 Codizes, where in case of the Daemons Codex I'm only using 25% of. In a way they gave you the impression to do something like that, when they put Nurgle Daemon units into the DG Codex and Tzeentch Daemons into the Thousand Sons Codex, but then you realized these were only page fillers that would make your army worse if you actually used them and the really useful units stayed in the Daemons Codex.
