So 9th is coming soon and I was looking at starting a new army. In the past I favored the guard and I even started putting together a nice mordian army but I dont think I'm liking it that much. I love the guard but not sure i want to play them on the tabletop. That being said I've been really interested in Thousand Sons, Blood Ravens, Eldar (craftworlds), and possibly a new guard regiment most likely valhallans. I saw some good start collecting boxes ok the first three as well. If anyone has any advice on these guys or can give me the pros and cons of each on how they play that would be awesome!

Thank you guys!

Do you already have Guard now?

Your preference between TS, Marines and Craftworlds being equal, the obvious one, from an easy of collecting perspective, would be Blood Raven Marines. You can play them with your Guard until you got a full army and you'll get a good start with the new Indomitus box.

What about the Guard do you like/dislike?

I think the first question is what do you want from the army. You're saying that you're not as happy playing as guard on the tabletop, so what about them don't you like. What about them is causing you problems and, as well, what do you feel you're missing and want from an army on the tabletop.

You seem to be focusing on gameplay more than visual designs; so lets talk about what you want from the gameplay side of things. Because that's an area where there are objective answers that you can get; unlike visuals which is purely a personal choice on what you do and don't like.

There's honestly not much I dislike. I just have been in the mood to do something different before I pour money into the guard and before its a bit too late to make an army switch. I also wish GW would give us some more guard units but thats not going to happen seeing its only even made to order which isn't happening now. Maybe switching the regiment would be a good thing too. I dont necessarily like the mordians doctrine.

However, I have always liked the eldar and the other ones I mentioned and with 9th coming out I was planning on making a switch.

I have three mordian squads now, a have weapons and a chimera, yes, its not much but its something right?

Ok, thanks! I was leaning slightly more towards eldar from the three but thats a good idea of playing them with what guard I do have until I can get more, if I'm to go with them.

As to what you said Overread, what I want is something that can shoot. I always liked how the guard was very "shooty" but I want something with more punch and power but can also handle itself if it needs to get into melee. I always want more tanky things on the field. The guard have tanks yes i know haha, you know what I'm saying though?

As for visuals, the three I mentioned, I like all of their visuals so I already thought of that part haha!

Thank you

While I don't really play those armies, or much against them, if you want shooty but also decent in melee, go with the (Primaris) marines. As said you can also soup them in with your guard for the time being so you can try them out before getting a full force.

Sounds like you want dreadnoughts.

Haha i guess it does sound like that.

I dont mean to be annoying with all this but it is very tough to pick an army when they are all so cool! I like the thousand sons look and psych, I like the blood ravens because they are balanced, and the eldar are neat because of their big walking xenos machines haha

It is also worth noting that guard tanks are about to be able to handle themselves in melee a WHOLE LOT better, with the 9th edition rules.

Particularly those guard tanks like punishers, hellhounds, and the like, who do not mount blast weapons as their main armament.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Eldar are a visually and spiritually interesting race. They are also the most flexible army in terms of what shape it can take.

For a good start then a box of guardians, a wave serpent and the start collecting set. This way you have one of the best psykers in the game, serious firepower, mobility and the means with which to hold ground. You can also have deadly melee capability if you opt for the Wraithblades, as you will still have plenty of firepower from the other units.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.
