How come people always take blood angel smash captains over wolf captains? I would assume hitting on 2 to be better the hitting on 3 and +1 to wound roll. Or am I missing something? Any benefits to wolf captains over blood angels?

theres a few strats that add attacks (1 and d3?) another for a 3d6 charge or discard lowest along with a no overwatch relic and something something death company maybe

I don’t play either army so take this with a grain of salt, but from what I’ve read space wolves can make a killier smash lord (strat for exploding hits on 4s being the biggest) and blood angels have better positioning/charge range buffs (upon wings of fire, 3d6 charge, possibly turn into death company for forlorn fury)

In no particular order:

+1 to wound is significantly better than +1 to hit against the targets you're sending Smashy after.

Blood Angel relics blow Space Wolf relics out of the water.

Likewise, Blood Angel Strats make Smashy a guided missile thats exceptionally fast, exceptionally killy and relatively robust. Nothing the Wolves have can compare in raw efficacy.

Although he's not a smash captain due to his speed or lack there of isn't there a rule combo that makes the new Ragnar among the highest damage output models in the game?

Fight twice strat and exploding hits on 4s strat combined with with his 10 attacks on the charge.

Seriously though go look at Goonhammer’s math on Space Wolf Smash Lords. They are mathematically the killiest models in 40k barring Bloodthirsters with all the new toys from PA. And even then Bloodthirsters barely edge them out, don’t have character protection, cost double or more in points, and eat up just as many or more CP. They good.

None of that is to say that Blood Angels Smash Captains are inferior, or that Space Wolf Smash Lords are better. There’s trade offs to both.

So that's on average 30 st 6 ap 4 attacks with damage 2. Yeah that'll even do a number on super heavies let alone characters and units.

He can have five hundred attacks on average, and it still wont make him a superior choice. Reliable delivery far outweighs the degree of overkill Ragnar can put out.

The main reason is speed.
They have more and better ways of charging more reliably, can redeploy and get access to really useful relics.

Plus red looks better than grey
