"This is future-proof too: as new codexes are released, older ones will be removed and can be replaced using the code you get when you buy the new print version."

And here I thought Warmachine's app was offputting for charging you $5 for an entire faction's cards, here comes GW charging you $5 a month for basic features you can find online written by a high school student who bought a JavaScript For Dummies book two months ago.

Wyrd's "M3E" is the best bespoke wargaming app I have seen.

If I were making decisions at GW, I would consider a "premium" version perhaps "warlord" version that would be auto updated with codicies, faq's and erratas added next to rules and hyperlinked up for ease of use. I think people would pay $20/month for that. I might consider it even though I don't play frequently. It would guarantee revenue stream for GW since I stopped buying codexes after Orks 8th ED and their little update books after Kayun/Montka. I doubt that I'm alone. GW policy just wears me out.

Hopefully this isn’t the prelude to GW going after battle scribe. If so, we will be switching entirely to grim dark future.

There's no way I'll pay 4GBP/month unless the new codexes and CA's will also be free with the sub. So a free version will suffice for me.

Unless they indeed kill off BattleScribe. They actually might have a case for doing that on the iOS App store at least as soon as they finish BattleForge. But until that's released, I doubt anything is changing.

This all could be building up to the eventual "GW as subscription" model some people have been wishing for.. As in, a sub-based holistic system that always has uptodate FAQs, points and dexes.. But a little too early to tell just yet.

Initially I thought £3.99 was reasonable and I was all in.

Then I thought about it and realised not only is that £48 a year but what am I actually getting?

I think it's great that if you buy a physical codex you get the digital one free but for £48 per annum + cost of codex that seems a bit cheeky.

I'd be all in if they either:

Gave us Chapter Approved for free without having to buy the physical copy (as that works out to about the same as the yearly sub)

Or

Include White Dwarf for free every month.

My read of the description of the app:

Free version, buy book have access to the book(s) you bought.

Paid version, all books, all updates - no need to buy the books, get the updates, the faqs, and points changes. It even specifies art n stories n stuff... finally the army builder app - if it works - if it comes out, etc....

Now, the wording is... not very clear. So it could be you have to buy the books too, to access. Hopefully not.

If it does work as I read, that's huge savings, considering for orks alone is 300+ in books, and not including the fact most of those are behind a 150-200 pay wall of special release limited run sets. That will work great for me and 50 dollars a year ain't so bad. I could pay for the app for 3-4 years, save money. That being said, I already have a cellular tablet and could hotspot my laptop to my phone if it becomes necessary.

And, I have necron, space marine, cult, and custodes armies and would like inquisition and sisters.
