So, first of all, let me know if this is the wrong sub-forum, General seemed the best place to go for this question.

Anyway, hey! With 9th edition looming closer every day, I've been thinking about starting up a Sons of Malice force. They are incredibly interesting imo, as weird space cannibals who worship Malice and like to fight both the Imperium and Chaos. So, easy to represent them rules wise, just use the CSM Renegade rules, right? Well... I'm not sure about that. I had a think about it, and the idea of some Marines that just all suddenly go insane and start methodically and efficiently dismantling the local Imperium presence on various planets sounds really interesting to me, and now I'm torn if I want to use 'normal' SM rules with Primaris units, painted as the SoM or to just go with my original idea of doing CSM rules. What do you guys think? I'd love some more thoughts on this, and maybe some advice on what units would be fluffy to run!

For me an army project like this stands and falls with how well the conversions will be executed. The rules you would be using are only there to support your own fluff, they don't mandate it.

I guess I would first think about my own head canon for them. Are they using Demon princes or Demon machines? Are they using cult troops? Questions like that.

Some options might not be properly supportable by one ruleset or the other, but I would put the consideration which one is more powerful out of the way for the start.

Custom40k Homebrew - Alternate activation, huge customisation, support for all models from 3rd to 10th edition

Designer's Note: Hardened Veterans can be represented by any Imperial Guard models, but we've really included them to allow players to practise their skills at making a really unique and individual unit. Because of this we won't be making models to represent many of the options allowed to a Veteran squad - it's up to you to convert the models. (Imperial Guard, 3rd Edition)

A Primaris chapter that turns all Malice-y could be a fun project, have them all painted in the classic black and white, and mix in various chaos doodads like horns, skulls, icons etc.

Yeah, this is all very true! Got to figure out what I want to use.

I'm thinking they would use Chaos against itself. these guys would get Possessed in the name of controlling the Daemon and using it to fuel destruction of Chaos itself, or they'd enslave the daemon itself under sheer force of will.

Yeah, that's what I'm not sure about. I guess normal SM get all the cool relic stuff, but CSM get all the Daemon stuff, so I just need to determine if they are more using really old stuff and Primaris more, or daemonic stuff more.

Oh absolutely! The idea of that is what got me into the idea in the first place.
