As asked... this has been a rule at times (I think.. or did I imagine it?). Is this the case in 9th?

No. However you can only get refunded CP for the detachment your warlord is in.
Also, there was never such a rule.

This was never a thing in 8th. The closest I can think of is in Apocalypse your Warlord used to have to be the unit with the highest leadership. In 9th, Warlord selection is defined by the mission pack. For the Eternal War missions, it works the same as 8th edition, you can pick any non-Fortification model, and of that model is a CHARACTER, it gets a Warlord Trait. Keep in mind Core Detachments refund their cost if you have your Warlord in that detachment.

This is not compulsory, but you will save more command points if you can do it that way.

Thanks... I guess I totally misremembered that rule. Too many editions in my brain!

I thought in 8th ANY model could be nominated your warlord... you just didnt get a warlord trait if it wasn't a character.
BRB 8th
Once you have mustered your army, nominate one of your models to be your Warlord (this cannot be a model with the Fortifications Battlefield Role). If your Warlord is a CHARACTER, it can use a Warlord Trait ... etc
I brought a single craftworlds super heavy detachment to a single detachment local tourny once with a cobra as my warlord... no warlord trait XD but it was neat. Automatically Appended Next Post: just read the new rule in the new leaked rules... my above list is still viable because in 9th "your warlord MUST be a character(if your army has any) ... if it also has the character keyword, it will have a warlord trait...
So basically craftworld, gaurd and tau can technically get their 6 CP super heavy detatchment discounted,,, if they elect to bring no characters XD... not a very good list lol.

As an aside, as "infinite" rolls is actually impossible even if the FAQ "allows" it, then it will always be a non-zero chance to pass them all. Eventually the two players will die. If they pass the game on to their decendents, they too will eventually die. And, at the end of it all, the universe will experience heat death and it, too, will die. In the instance of "infinite" hits, we're talking more of functional infinity, rather than literal.
RAW you can't pass the game onto descendants, permissive ruleset. Unless we get an FAQ from GW. |

Actually they can't. You only get CP refunded for your detachment if it is a Patrol, Battalion, or Brigade with them Warlord in it. There is an exception for Knights (Imperial and Chaos) and the Super Heavy detachment, but only those have extra stipulations depending upon the warlord model.
